San Fran for Texans?

January 19th, 2011
I'm going to San Francisco in a few weeks for work...but I'm SURE I'll find time to take some pics. :) Just wondering if anyone knows of "the spot," or anything that I shouldn't miss...especially any SF natives/locals who know where the good spots are that I might not find on a tourist map??? I've never been, so I want to make the most of my free time while I'm there. Thanks!!

@shanlewis1970 thank you! I'm making a list! My hosts are the folks at Grand Hyatt, so I'm sure they'll know some of the places I find out about. :)

I am fond of North Beach and would recommend going to Marios. Coit tower is also great and there are wonderful little walking paths in that neighborhood. YOu will have a great time!!

well, there's tons to see in San Fran. Don't miss the Golden Gate Bridge, there's a park and a beach and you can walk around quite a bit there and get some awesome shots. For some foggy shots, go early in the morning. Also pier 39 is a pretty touristy spot, but neat if you've never been. I don't know what kind of food etc. you're into but there's an awesome coffee shop called Ritual that you must hit if you like "real" coffee (not Starbucks) and Herbivore is an amazing restaurant, all veggie but I promise you won't miss the meat if you like that sort of thing. There are two locations Valencia St and Divisadero St. Oh, and Lombard St (the really windy one) is a good shooting op too. And just driving/walking around looking at the neat houses and architecture is fun too.

@andifree @imagesbysofia Wow, thank you both!

the whole city is photogenic, even the grimy dirty parts. Just drive around (if youre brave enough), and youre bound to find something wonderful. :)

sutro baths!! san francisco's only real ruin- it's very dramatic. but it's hard to go wrong, it's a beautiful city all around with lots of hidden treasures.

@sdpace I agree with Maddie, Sutro Baths is great. If you are renting a car, there is an overlook of the GG Bridge (on the Marin side) that is amazing http://365project.org/karice/365/2010-05-26
Look for a book "stairway walks of san francisco" that will take you to some neat places. Also, you can look up Precita Eyes--they do a mural tour of the mission which is full of street art/activism history. Clarion Alley has great street art on the whole alley http://365project.org/karice/365/2010-02-24
Luna Park on Valencia is good food, great martinis and an AMAZING smore's dessert. You can do the classic "painted ladies" at Alamo Square. Big farmers market at the Ferry Building on Saturday mornings (and delicious sandwiches at the Acme Bread Co. inside.)
Ping me if you want more detail on anything. Have a great great time!!

@sdpace there are great walking tours of downtown and along parts of telegraph hill that are amazingly photogenic. Industrial is toward the south. Bridges and the view across the 'Gate from Marin Headlands. Maybe you're up for a photo tour?

I'm going there next weekend, its my hubby's birthday so we're driving.. can't wait! I've been before but I didn't have a camera then toooo young, not now though! WATCH OUT! I'm excited to go see the painted ladies!

Stacy, if you have a chance, go just north of SF up to Muir Woods (it's not far at all). We did that when we were out there a couple of years ago and it was amazing. Definitely something not to miss!

Enjoy! It's a beautiful city. We weren't there nearly long enough.

The presidio! It's an old spanish military base(I have one picture up of it). It has a great old timey feel. The Bay bridge is also equally as beautiful as the Golden Gate bridge. Golden Gate Park. China Town is very Touristy but there are a lot of great pictures to be taken there. Also some advice would be to take a drive you never know what you'll see! lol

A few of my favorite spots -- Fort Point, Baker Beach, San Francisco National Cemetery in the Presidio, The windmill on the West side of Golden Gate Park, Palace of Fine Arts...

I forgot to mention this place you might like, Point Lobos, there's potential for some cool ocean shots here and there's a GIANT camera obscura there. I have yet to get to go inside, they have weird hours and even if it says it's open it might not be. Still worth checking out though. Here's a website: http://giantcamera.com/

Sofia, I went to Point Lobos today. It was my second time to hike the area. It was beautiful! I totally agree when you said cool ocean shots, the beauty is breath taking. Today we got to see some grey whales shooting water, it was pretty amazing since it was my first time to ever see a whale in person..
