Any tips on shooting neon lights? I've tried a few times but it never comes out well...

Heya.. what about it with your photo's dont you like? I'm not sure whats going wrong for ya ;-)

Tips tho from me is to shoot mannual exposure as the glow is bright and the night sky/buildings at night dark, and this can muck around with any auto settings - I would suggest shooting stuff at dusk for the best time because there's enough light to add detail around the signs if thats the kind of thing you wanted.
Lemmie know if there's anything you had a specific in mind and will try to help.

@rich57 If they're really bright sometimes a little filler flash can help with surrounding details, also flash WB works well for neon and stage lights a lot of the time.

When I say a little filler I mean with the flash set down to 1/16 or 1/32... Might be different on other peoples - I'm using a pretty old speedlite 420EZ

@blightygal Yeah they are either horribly overexposed where you can see the building or the lights are fine but everything else is too dark. I was trying this at 11pm so maybe the dusk idea is a good one! Cheers. Oh I was trying to get a picture of a restaurant and I like the neon sign it's got. Hey have you finished your new job already then? (If that's not too personal!...)

@killerjackalope Thanks Adam, I'll try out a little filler flash. Although I'm not sure what WB is!

@rich57 WB I think its white balance? Anyway, yeah, its bit of a git with trying to get lots of detail in because of the brightness of neon. Dusk is an easy answer and flash is a great idea too :-)

And yep, left on second day..... ;-)

@rich57 Yeah, white balance... One nice thing about the brightness of neon is it can stand up to a reasonable amount of flash if you want to have subjects well lit with neon in the photo too.

This sort of thing?? See camera settings if any help, I found it hard. But the first one is at dusk

@azza_l Those look well, for the top one maybe a higher F-stop and compensate with a slightly higher ISO and the shutter speed down to 1/90th to make the lights a little sharper. Though the light always bleeds a little even with really high quality optics.

I get that issue a lot when trying to catch someone on stage rim lit with stage lights, I know it's not the exact same thing but same cause.
