How to Shoot Bubbles

January 21st, 2011
Hi! I'm pretty new to photography and I'd love to do a bubble shot for my photo today...does anyone have any suggestions for settings, lighting, etc? Any help would be much appreciated! :)

Never tried to shoot bubbles. Any particular setup of bubbles? How are you creating them? Will they be floating or just sitting in a tub/sink?

I'd start with natural light (room light, window light) and see what you get.

I'd shoot wide open to start (low aperture). This will give you a sharp subject and blur the background. It will also allow you to shoot in lower light. External lighting can give a different look (like a catchlight in a person's eye).

Tripod might be a good idea, especially if they're not moving bubbles.

If they're floating, you might want to stop down as you might get more than a single bubble, but that may require external lights.

I look forward to your shots!

Thanks! :D I ended up actually discovering this really cool lighting when I just happened to set the bubble wand down! But I definitely want to keep experimenting with bubbles, they're so much fun! ;D I'll definitely keep your tips!

Ohhhhh. I almost hate you, but I don't. Shooting bubbles from a bubble wand sounds fun. I'm almost considering a midnight run to Walmart right now to buy some haha.

Can you share your "really cool lighting" or is it a secret? haha

Hahaha not at all! ;D I honestly just discovered it by mistake, there was no special lighting except for my desk lamp! I set the wand and the container on my desk just to put them down and I happened to notice a flash of random color...so I just found the right angle (which ended up being almost level with the surface of the bubble in the wand) and played around with it! :)

just saw your pic, great idea!!
One trick I've learned with taking bubble pics is to get someone else to blow them for you so you can just focus on taking the pic!! It is incredably hard when doing it all yourself.
I took this one the other day http://365project.org/selardore/extras/2011-01-19 ...total fluke with my sons finger popping into the shot!

But to get this bubble shot... We were outside, it was sunny with a few clouds here and there, my hubby was in charge of blowing the bubbles for the kids. I was using my macro lens, manual exposure with a vivid setting, high contrast and high saturation and sharpness to bring out the colours in the bubbles. HTH :)

I get “how-to” e-mails from various websites and got one on how to shoot bubbles from www.photojojo.com You might search their website for info. It included a link to this incredible gallery of bubble shots:

I did a bubbleshoot once. Light is very important, as that creates the beautiful color spectrums on the bubbles. Also, if possible, having your camera set to 3d or continuous focus really helps. I use a center focus to select one bubble I wish to follow, and then let the camera continuously adjust itself to stay in focus and take the shot. The more light you use, the better the photos, and you will not need a tripod, so you can freely chase about catching those bubbles. :-)

Good luck, happy hunting, and hope to see some nice bubbles soon!
