CANON 500D.

Is it worth it? Should I really get it? I really want to move on from the awful point and shoot camera that I have that is starting to not make sense at all. It's 6 megapixels, it now vibrates a lot, the lens keeps getting blurry, images aren't focused well, short life.. etc etc
Anyway, maybe in like 6 months (pssh. I can wait. ) I might be getting a dSLR, sooo.. A Canon 500D would be fine? Or should I get the Canon 550D? What are the differences and is it even worth buying the 550D?

i have the 500d, my first dSLR. I LOVE it!!! Easy to use and well worth the price tag. I have taken probably well over 10,000 photos on mine, never had a problem with it. It really is my third child.

Ira
All I can say is: I love the one I'm using right now. I've been using it for only a few days now and I hate putting it away...
I can SO understand you urgently want to switch from your Point and Shoot to a DSLR...This is going to make you a happy person for sure! It has worked for me. ;-)))

The 500D is a great camera, but if you're going to use it for movies at all and want a little bit better of a metering system, higher resolution, and better LCD on the back the extra few bucks for the 550D would be another good choice. I do most of my shooting with my 550D and love it.

Canon EOS 550D vs EOS 500D Key differences:

Higher resolution 18MP CMOS with gapless micro lenses
ISO 6400 no longer in 'expanded' range (12,800 max remains the same)
Redesigned buttons and new movie/live view button
Customizable auto ISO ranges
Improved 63 zone metering (iFCL)
3:2 format screen with more pixels
Improved movie functionality
Slightly higher burst shooting rate (though buffer holds fewer shots)
HDMI control (CEC)
SDXC compatible

I'm a 500Der :D

if that was my choice.. i'd go the 550D purely for the ISO and video capability. ESPECIALLY for the ISO... I had the 450D and the noise at ISO400 and above started to just annoy the heck out of me

ive had the 500 since september would recommend it dont think theres that much in it for photographer that you would notice. If its a entry level and you have a budget to stick to get the 500

i think because of difference in cost, it's not worth going for 550d - extra few megapixels won't make any difference unless you're planning on printing wallpaper!

500D ---> amazing!

@vikdaddy i think the 550D will be better for noise with a higher upper ISO and also does full HD video

i should probably add, that I had the 450D and still think its a great camera, the 500D will be awesome too. My brother has the 550D and absolutely loves it. Either way, you'll be happy but if it were me, i'd do the jump to 550D

@toast Fair point, but who really uses ISO at that high a level? Both do HD by the way, it's just that the 550D has more frame rates.

It's my first dSLR and I love my 500D :D
It's my baby ^^

As @vikdaddy and @azza_l said - the difference isn't really something you'll be pulling your hair over. I don't know what the price difference between the two is there, Dalia, but you could probably get some other useful stuff for the money you'd save. A tripod, some filters or even the nifty fifty. Actually, you could probably get all of that. I was actually aiming for the 550D but they didn't have it in stock and I wanted it on the spot, so I went with the 500D and in turn saved EUR200!

@toast Your post reminded me of one of my sister's uni friends who lives in London - he was over in September and he told me he'd bought a 550D so I asked if he'd brought it along and he said no - he didn't know how to use it - just bought it to one-up his brother's 450D -_-
