I think this shot would could be improved drastically if I had not cut off the bag in the background.

Sorry to every1 that commented on the one i made like 5 minutes ago, I accidentally hit delete instead of edit.

I wondered what happened :)

I would move her hair a bit so you can see her eyes/ reflection in her glasses. It would add a little punch and give insight to what she is looking at.
January 25th, 2011
@mattyb Yeah i personally hate that one, just a quick snapshot, didnt take any decent photos that day.

Some of the detail has been blown out on the side of the ripple, and a touch of color would be nice :)
January 25th, 2011
@capemayblackdog Yeah sorry about that :P commented right as i did it too XD

Agreed. I was playing around with color in photoshop and with construction paper to bounce the flash off of. I tried a few different ones, but this one just appealed to me. The only color that seemed to look ok was a blue color. All the other ones I tried just looked too artificial. As for the highlights....a lot of them came out like this. I think the flash was too close. Thanks for the critique!!!

Hope I am doing this right lol I am such a newbie.. HJ I love your photos and it was very difficult to actually find one that I would change in any respects. So I am sorry this one caught the short straw. I would have scrolled the camera slightly more to the left, removing the greenery on the rigth hand side.
January 25th, 2011
@michelleyoung why not crop into the left 2/3 of the image... the neat red/white things against the brown could be interesting and just lose the right 1/3 all together?
January 25th, 2011

Would be better if the bottom of the heart was in the frame, and the charm on the left also
January 25th, 2011
@icywarm
I agree with you.. I think HJ has taken a beautiful picture but i think the greenery in the background drawms the focus away from the beauty in the foreground.
I personally think losing that 1/3 as you say would improve the shot.
January 25th, 2011
@michelleyoung yeah I messed this up... I thought we posted one of our own after we comment... my bad...
January 25th, 2011
@icywarm Its all good.. Never bad :o)

I love this picture and it is in my faves, though I am left wondering just what does the full colour version look like...

The amputated elbow isn't a strong point for me. The color and lighting is nice, but I really feel like the model lacks any emotion. It's not conventional portrait, and it's not emotive portrait or telling any kind of story. It's a technically nice image, but artistically I feel it's lacking something. In contrast, your photo of mitch is both full of personality, well captured, and I can "get" something from it.
January 25th, 2011
@michelleyoung Hardly colored at all, black shoes, yellowish background ( bad lighting) :P

@melissab1103 thanks for the constructive criticism :)

Would be nicer if the dogs had some dynamic range, so there was some detail to look at as they are the focal point, they're just too dark
January 25th, 2011

Ok, I like the idea of that photo, but her clothes doesn't really match with the mood of the photo, and her eyes are to black.
I would maybe choose a little different angle, jus like two step on the left.
January 25th, 2011
@stoksy forgot to tag you :)
January 25th, 2011

could have been better if the dead plant at the lower left corner isn't cut off... or take away the whole broken branch... my eyes are drawn in it, but nonetheless, it's good... ^_^
January 25th, 2011
@lalola616 opppsie... forgot to tag you.. ^___^

@maceugenio - I don't actually know what was at the other end of the bridge.. but it might have been nice to see the end of it? maybe have a bit more of it in focus? :/

Your photos are so fantastic I don't really know what to say/which to pick.. but I felt like that one was slightly weaker than the others (still awesome.. but I had to pick one!)
January 25th, 2011
@katiegc24 Oh! I just love your project! So cute. I love the composition and the reflection in this one. I would recommend the exact same image on something other than the couch, as I think that distracts a little bit. I think a simpler background, like a table or the floor, would have given more focus to the central subject.

i just LOVE LOVE LOVE this photo by @polarvrtx
the subtle color and detail in the branches, and the water droplets, all so beautiful. my only (humble and amateur) suggestion would be to frame the photo differently so that the bird is not in the center, and maybe take a step to the left so that the there is some space between the bird and the big tree trunk in the background. but what a lovely shot!
January 25th, 2011
@christiq Ahhh, I picked this one and then read your caption about bulb issues! I love this light fixture and that it is repeated down the hallway, but the recessed lighting in between is somewhat distracting. I think a closer crop of the fixture itself would have been nice.

January 25th, 2011

this was a good photo but I think if you zoomed in to just the mirror it would be better.... That way you get a little bit bigger for a self-portrait and not lost in everything around you!
January 25th, 2011
love the contrasting colours in this shot. However, I would have highlighted the flower more rather than the greenery.

@vanderkip I love the color of the strawberry and how it changes from green to red, but i wish the strawberry was taken from a better angle because of its shape. I am only a new, very young photographer for my high school in America, so I am very sorry if I have no idea what I am talking about! It is my fourth day on this site and I am in desperate need of critique and folowers! Thank you very much!

@tgyenis I really like the contrast of the colors in the label, but it's distracting to me to have the words cut off.
January 26th, 2011
@callalilla These Shisa look very cool. I like the composition but I wish the entire statues were in focus. I really like your use of shallow dof in some of your other shots but I feel like these should be entirely in focus. I think it's the museum lover in me. :P

January 26th, 2011
@bigbearnelson Thanks! You're totally right. I hadn't put my finger on what I didn't love about that shot. I think I was cramped for space and trying to blur out the wall behind them.
January 26th, 2011
@callalilla Overall, I thought your shots were great. I had a hard time finding one that I thought could be improved upon.
January 26th, 2011
@callalilla Thanks so much! Do you maybe have time to critique my other 3 pictures because I am a VERY unexperianced photgrapher and I just started taking pictures! Thanks! Much help is needed!
January 26th, 2011
I really think you should have dusted it !!

January 27th, 2011

I really like the composition of the shot and the subject and I get the feel you were going for. I think if you had moved a step or two to the left & turned so that the light from the window was highlighting the girl w/o the sliver of window being present in the picture, it would maybe show the corner of the music stand and show more of the keys/music also. That is my humble opinion. I do like that you can still see her face and concentration on the task.
January 27th, 2011
@all71s

Love the close-up grainy-ness. Personally I would have singled out one colored chip for a cool effect but maybe you took the pic in black and white? Nicely done!
January 28th, 2011
@elephantgirl yes, it was in black and white, thank you for the critique
