What's the best camera to buy?

February 2nd, 2011
Well I'm sure i'm not the only one - but now i'm one month in I want a new and better camera!!! Just wanted to get peoples opinion on what brand or camera you think is the best?

I want to take sharper and closer photos and also want to be able to do continuous shooting and take nice night photos!

Thanks

@tnaki Hi Tineke. I've been doing this for just a month as well. I've had my little point and shoot for about 3 years but always managed to leave it at home if ever we were going anywhere of interest...that's one of the reasons I started this project! I've now been seriously bitten by the bug and think I ought to have a more sophisticated camera. It'll be great to get some professional advice regarding this. Thanks for starting this discussion :o)xx

@psychographer Yeah I'm the same - just got my very simple digital camera but would love to upgrade! I hope someone has some good advice and recommendations for us!

Two(ish) questions.

1. What's your current camera?
2. What's your budget for the new one?
2b. Do you want to keep throwing money at this forever?

@eyebrows @tnaki I'm currently using a Canon DIGITAL IXUS 75. I'd like some suggestions and then depending on what they are I can either buy one or save up so not really sure on a budget as such. I don't want anything too sophisticated. I know a lot of people use digital SLRs but I'm thinking maybe just another digital with more sophisticated features. I'm taking it one step at a time :o)

There's so much choice on the market, I'd suggest what you should be asking is for people's recommendations of a good photographic retailer in your area. That way you can go to a shop you can trust to give you informed advice, and you can get hands on with a whole range of different cameras to suit your budget. What works for me as the best camera in the world may not for you.

Nod
In my opinion, just to be safe get into either Canon or Nikon system, whichever is more available and carry better prices where you live. Other systems are also great, but these majors have full range.

The best camera you can buy? Depends on how much you want to spend! How about a Hasselblad?

@psychographer When i started the project i was using an olympus mj1040 point and shoot, i didn't want to upgrade to a dslr but still wanted quality photos so i met in the middle and got a Panasonic Lumix FZ38 (FZ35 in america) bridge camera - it was £220 in the UK - hope this helps a little :)
February 2nd, 2011
@psychographer ive just seen that you live in england - if you do want to look at the FZ38 its on pcworld or currys website :)

@hdoyle Hi Helen. Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely take a look :o)xx

@vikdaddy - You weren't paying attention to the requirements. It's gotta do fast continuous shooting and good night shots (AKA great image quality at low ISO)

Clearly the Nikon D3s is a better fit since it'll fire at 11fps and it can shoot at ISO 100,000. And you can get it at the bargain price of $5300 instead of $40k.

@sudweeks Josh, clearly I mentioned the hasselblad in jest. It's the world's most expensive camera! Did you pay enough attention to even click on the link?

...Or, was it a sense of humour failure, perhaps?
February 2nd, 2011
@vikdaddy that was a lol moment. :)
February 2nd, 2011
LOL - I agree with Arnel. Thanks for the link VK - yup, that camera is on my wish list!

@vikdaddy

Wow.That`s like the Koenigsegg of digital cameras.
...will I be considered a pro from the moment I buy one? .... :)

Canon rebel dslr is a great place to start.
February 2nd, 2011
Sharper and closer photos will depend on the LENS, not the camera if you go DSLR. Just throwing that out there...
February 2nd, 2011
@spaceman yepp... everyone will invite you to their shoots... not cause they like you, but because they want to borrow your equipment...

@vikdaddy @sudweeks dry humour in text is tough... but I was laughing...

Nothing of value for the OP.. .carry on carry on nothing to see here....

(Oh... goto your local pro store and ask to play with all the cameras, maybe rent one or two... you will know... it will be like first love when you find one that fits...

@eyebrows Just an oplympus FE190/X750 - budget i'm in New Zealand so maybe under $1000 or under $500? Don't really want it to keep costing me :-)
February 2nd, 2011
@vikdaddy Haha pretty funny situation. Could play out sort of like this depending how he replies ;)

@tnaki Under $1000 kiwi eh, well according to xe.com that's about £480 so you'd be looking at an entry level dSLR from Canon or Nikon most likely, with a stock lens useful for a variety of things but not, particularly, close ups. Would be good for continuous and ok at night time too, though. But not too portable either. And if you wanted to take good close up (or "macro") shots you'd need a new lens and that could be another $700 kiwi easily.

From here it's looking like a higher end compact may be more suited. @vikdaddy what's the one you've got, that snazzy Canon?
February 2nd, 2011
@eyebrows The Canon 7D
February 2nd, 2011
@vikdaddy No no no the little SX950dave or whatever it was called. Or maybe it was someone else...
February 2nd, 2011
@eyebrows Canon S90?
February 2nd, 2011
Yes him! Thanks @vikdaddy ^_^

@tnaki perhaps a Canon S90 might be worth looking into?
February 2nd, 2011
Canon S95 is the newer version, go for that...
