I am interested in a macro lens for my Canon EOS Rebel XTi and I was hoping for some recommendations. Please let me know what you like about the lens you use and if there is anything you don't particularly like. I am intrigued by lots of the close-up shots of eyes and eyelashes that folks are posting and would love to do more close-up work in general. Thanks! :)
I agree with wahyo. The Canon 100mm f/2.8 is definitely the way to go. I don't have one yet, but I have read up on these lenses a lot and it will be my next purchase.
There are a lot of other macros from other brands and sizes. You can chose a different brand to save you a few $$, just make sure you are getting a true macro (1:1). But from all that I read, your money would be best spent on the Canon 100mm
i also had to get the same lens as wahyu after looking at his macro shots . Great lens , very fast focus when on auto . Good crisp shots for portraits . I kinda suck at macro work ( i shake around alot and i dont use a tripod , too much work lol ) . Will get back into it when i get myself a stronger tripod.
My 100mm cost me $600 australian and i dont regret it .
I have also recently purchased this lens and it is fantastic. I need to use it more but the times I have I have been so pleased. I love the way you can focus on a subjct and then change the point of focus with the ring that runs around the lens (as you can see I am not technical lol!!)
I found a macro converter lens online...I thought I'd try it first before spending toooooooo much on one. I'm hoping to improve the eye first before spending too much more on this "hobby" :)
Canon 100mm 2.8L is the way to go! It's fast and super sharp! I love it for close ups of babies and it's an awesome portrait lens. Heres a portrait that I took with it serveral days ago
I have the 100mm 2.8L and it's a wonderful lens but pricy, about $950.00 USD. An alternative for you would be the Canon EF-S 60mm 2.8. About $400.00, less if used. Or go for a Sigma canon mount macro for even less. Check reviews on fredmiranda.com.
Thanks, everyone! It seems the 100 mm f/2.8 is the overall favorite, by a long shot. I'm not sure how many choices there really are - I appreciate everyone's input. I also found more photographers to "follow!" Thank you!
Most of my macro photos taken from this lens. It's great for taking portrait to.
(Adorama USD 569)
