Thinking about an upgrade-Any suggestions?

February 7th, 2011
Hello Everyone,

First, thank you for taking time to read this discussion.

I am thinking about upgrading my Nikon d5000 to perhaps the Nikon d7000. Is this a good idea or should I consider something else? I would like to stick with Nikon since I am more familiar with Nikon and because I am concerned that the lens I have will not be compatible with another brand. (I am not as familiar with lens compatibility as of yet)

Lenses I have: Nikkor 18-105mm and Tamron 10-24mm

Thanks!

I don't have any advice, just wanted to give you some sort of response.. As of right now I only have a Nikon Coolshot L110 and may be upgrading soon to a D3100.

@cw24 I don't follow Nikon that closely, I'm a Canon user myself, if there's about to be a newer/better Nikon released then holding off either for the newer one or a discount on it would be a good plan.

I'm not sure about other makers compatibility with Nikon, I think it's just them actually but don't know for sure.

Is the D5000 that out of date or are there features you really want with the D7000, because there's always the possibility of getting some new lenses or flash equipment...

I always use this website when shopping for Nikon products. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d7000.htm

After reading this article.. I want a D7000!

@cw24 looking at the side-by-side comparison on www.dpreview.com the D7000 seems to have a lot of nice features, but unless you're seriously finding that your current one is holding you back i'd agree with @killerjackalope, a good highend lens is a better upgrade than the body. digitalrevtv has a funny video on it glass vs body here

Candace, I'm in the exact same boat as you. I've only had my D5000 for about 18 months so I'm telling myself it's not time for an upgrade yet. But ever since the D7000 came out, I want it! I'm not sure when Nikon is releasing their 2011 cameras, but I'm thinking they'll upgrade the D700 next and that's way out of my price range. Hopefully, the D7000 body will come down in price a little soon.

If you're even considering the 7000, just forget about the 5000. The d7000 offers everything the 'pro-sumer' d90 has plus more. Without looking it up, I believe they improved on the autofocus and the HD video (at minimum). Personally, I think the video on a DSLR is hokey, but that seems to be the trend. From everything I have read, the D7000 is worth every penny and wise investment to be considered. WWw.dpreview.com has always been fairly reliable for me with respect to reviews and comparisons. I believe last month's issue of Popular Photography had a couple page article dissecting the d7000, as well.

@lvmychunkalunka Go for the upgrade it will allow you to expand on your photography creativity. @killerjackalope I don't think the d5000 is out dated but I am looking for something with more features, but I see your point about getting some new lenses or flash equipment. :) @tamallamma Thanks for the link I will check it out. :) @blacktau Thanks for responding to this discussion. I do feel the d5000 is holding me back but I see your point about getting a good high end lens as well. Thanks! @sxd238 I agree with you about the price going down.

@jcrowley40 I agree with you about the DSLR video. Thanks for linking the website.

Thanks to everyone who has replied to this discussion board. I find all your advice so helpful. THANK YOU!!! :)
