How beautiful is your city.

February 9th, 2011
In a recent lecture at my university we discussed cities. We were asked to consider whether we prefered life in the city, country or suberbs .. I concuded the city. I find it fasanating sitting consuming the culture and people watching.
We also discussed how cities in the UK are heavily surveyed.
Do you notice the CCTV cameras in your city? .. is your city beautiful and a place you love to be or do you prefer the suberb/ country lifestyle.. where is more beautiful to photograph?

I like both city and country but I live in the city and so I take most of my shots there, but I can easily get to countryside-ish spots even within the city. I certainly prefer to take my pictures outdoors wherever I am though. I really like taking street scenes and the people who live in cities seem less likely to take umbrage from a camera in their vicinity!

Immensely :) I love being here, mostly because I didn't grow up here so I've never taken it for granted.

I'm not much of a beachbum come summer, but I do enjoy shooting there.

We lived in a large town but worked and did virtually everything in the city (Nottingham) We have recently moved to the coast and are well and truly enjoying country living, for me the City was good when I was younger, into my career and social life/shopping but country life for our family is is the life for us now. Photowise I love both but I probably shoot more in the countryside and enjoy others shots of the city.

I love the action and energy of the city. I would not like to live in the country far away from people and activities. Yes, looking through my pictures, I feel my city is really pretty with lots of parks, trees, and mountain vistas.

I guess I'm lucky, I work in a beautiful city, live in an interesting historic town, drive through countryside to get home and am a 3 minute walk from the beach :)

@minxymissk Sounds like you live in the perfect place!

@cdford It's not glamorous, it's not anything special, but I adore it (it's Great Yarmouth in Norfolk btw)

I've lived in a lot of places--all sorts of cities, islands, small towns and everywhere in between. I live in a big city now but send me to a remote place on the Scottish moors and I'd be a happy camper (:

I have discussed this a few times with my husband & we decided we were suburbanites - really boring!! But I can walk into our very beautiful (small) city of Cambridge which has some wild areas in it as well as loads of activities. I can easily get into some lovely country as well, however I really really miss hills and the seaside. If I had to move I would head further into the city rather than out to the country. I LOVE the countryside but I hate the thought of driving everywhere - and our teenage kids would drive me crazy!

I've always been a big city girl. I lived in Miami, Florida, U.S. for 18 years. It's seriously a melting pot. The cultures, tourism and city life itself is great. Now I'm living in a smaller city and it's so much better. The biggest changes are how nice people are and no traffic. I honestly wouldn't mind living in Smalltown, USA at all!

Nod
I like spending 5 days a week in the city (Bangkok) and weekend the beach somewhere.

i live outside the city for practical reasons but i love, love the city so much more. i love taking urban shots and there is always something to explore from an odd perspective like mine. being in the city just makes me want to fly and makes me feel alive.

and yes there are cameras on every lightpole, it is really annoying when you make a mistake and get a ticket in the mail later! sometimes i take photos of the cameras. let them wonder or be amused. ;)

I live in a town of 9000 people surrounded by corn and soy bean fields. It is a 50 minute drive to the nearest mall and large chain restaurant. I am an introvert and really hate noise and crowds and traffic. I grew up in a small city El Paso, Texas, but have lived in small towns all my adult life. When I go to the city, I enjoy the sights, and sounds, the amenities, and the bright lights, but I am always ready to go back to the country.

Where I live now, we have a 3 screen movie theater, a few really nice restaurants, an amazing college that brings culture to our door step and I feel safe here.

@becksesme It can be very beautiful, but also very, very bleak sometimes. Belfast is a bit weird that way.

I live in a really compact city! I can walk mostly everywhere I need to go in 30-40mins tops and the public transport system does the job if i'm lazy!

Personally I prefer the suburbs, to have a patch that is my own and have peace and quiet is something that I miss from time to time.

Mine is beautiful :-) i live on a mountainside in wales - i will add some viewpoints one day to my project. Lots of greenbelts and farmland - a very small town really but we take it for granted

Sadly,I don`t live in a city, but a small town, and it may sound like a cliche that characters say in the movies, but I`m so sick of it,it`s basically a small sh**hole, where nothing interesting happens.Ever.
City people usually complain about how they wish they would live in a quiet town, closer to nature, but I`m exactly the opposite.I want to see lotts of busy people, that mind their own business in a chaotic and often unpredictable society, acting like robots.I want traffic jams, construction and ambulance noise.I`ve only took a ride on a subway twice,in my lifetime! ...So far,I think my city of choice would be Antwerp, but only because I had the chance to check it out a couple of times, last summer, but I`m sure there are tonns of other cities I would move to,if I could.

As a City Planner, the City is not just downtown with high rises or houses that share walls. Most cities have a diversity of housing stock, areas of dense development, entertainment, but also have park space on both a grand scale and a neighborhood feeling. I am now taking more and more pictures in the City and have yet to run out of any subject matter. Now it is nice to get out to the country or small town where you have more obvious scenery. I will say that I have yet to find the suburbs interesting for many things (and I grew up in one).

I love York too...I live on the outskirts of Manchester and have the best of both worlds, the penines and the city. I think I enjoy the countryside more because i have to cycle through the streets to get to it and suddenly you just make a turn and find yourself on top of a hill and you can see for miles...but it would be too lonely to live there!

I grew up on a small farm, which was near larger farms, a small city, a large city, and suburbs. As a young adult, I lived in small towns. I have lived in a small city for the last 21 years. I can see beauty in all settings. However, I can't wait for the snow to melt and the temperature to get warmer. I want to take pictures of my city. Some of the houses are Victorian (towers, stain glass, etc.). There are lots of historical buildings. There are two historical districts. One is the downtown district. The other is the historical state fair grounds and buildings. My city also has lots of city parks. One park in particular is very pretty with a historical building, historical stadium, pond with a pretty bridge, landmarks to honor veterans and fire fighters, and a rose garden. I can't wait until it gets warmer (and the snow melts down) to go out and take pictures of my city!
