remote controls and tripods

i'm looking into getting some more equipment and i think the first things on my list will be a remote and a tripod so i can do some self portraits,i've seen some controls on e-bay for as little as £3 which seem too good to be true, does anyone have any advice on brands etc and tips on self portrait taking like how to get the focus right when you aren't in the frame when setting the camera up. the camera i will use will be my nikon d40 and i have 2 lenses an 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 and a 55-200mm1:4-5.6

Ok first let me warn you about my experience with purchasing an off brand remote from Amazon. I purchased a remote that was very inexpensive (around US $12). The sellers description of the remote listed it as compatible with my camera make and model, when it arrived the invoice had it listed as being compatible, but the packaging that the remote was in did not (had almost every Sony alpha camera but the one I have), I removed the remote and tried plugging into the camera and it was a no go. I called Sony and told them about the purchase and asked them if the remote was compatible, and they said in fact it wasn't (my camera isn't compatible with any wired remote). Ok babble over- do your research! My camera came with a pamphlet of compatible accessories, check to see if you have one of those and try to get a remote from that list. If those remotes are to expensive then find one that you like that is listed as compatible and call Nikon if you have to.
Now about about selfies: if you really want to do these I'd go for a wireless remote). To focus for these I always put some item (normally one of my kiddos) where I would be in frame and focus the camera- saves from having to take a gazillion pictures to just get the focus right.
Hope that helps:D Someone with a Nikon might be able to better direct you to a good remote, but better to be safe then sorry :D

the nikon remote that i got was less than $20us (actually my sister bought it for me for my birthday) so it's relatively inexpensive....and it's wireless....
it's this one http://tinyurl.com/4rakswf

as for a tripod, i just got a gorillapod, so it doesn't stand that tall...i used the gorillapod and the remote for my picture last night...it was set up on the coffee table in front of me while i was on the couch....
if you have it set to auto focus, it will focus when you use the remote

i would suggest a solid tripod, such as bogen - i have 2 that i have used and abused for over 15 years. they are a bit more costly, but worth it, and hold up. i have bought cheap remotes on ebay, both cabled and wireless, broke some and lost some. to me, it depends on how often you will use it. if you spend two or 3 dollars (us) on a remote that you only use occasionally, and it lasts a year before it breaks, you really haven't lost anything. if you are going to be using it all the time, you might want to think about going with a more expensive one.
