365 is testing myself and my gear.

March 19th, 2010
I am up to day 78, I have never taken a photo a day every day for 78 days before, so it is certainly new territory already.
It has been a challenge thus far and I am sure it will test me in new ways in the coming months.
What I have found is how much more careful I need to be with my equipment, more use means more chances of things going wrong.
So far I have had two lenses fall out of my camera bag, two missing memory card and I think a missing mini tripod.
Plus an external hard drive failure.
Then there is the time strain!
But it is STILL SO WORTH THE EFFORT!!

As a note though, I think I have come to the conclusion that my back pack style camera bag is not suited to my needs as the memory cards are stored in pockets on the outside, easy to forget to zip them back up, and a similar thing with the lenses accident, ie forgetting it was not zipped up. A different style bag should prevent both of these.

Wow michael, thats a fair bit of damage that you're doing. What i've done is to gear my stuff towards holiday / travel purposes and this helps surprisingly well. I have a lowerpro slingshot 100, which i've arranged the padding for my camera to fit in. I have a spare 50mm prime lens in a separate section provided by the padding arrangement which prevents it from falling out. Also my flash trigger and light meter fits in the other section formed by the padding.

Spare SD cards are in a case in the zipped up front section. Brushes / wipes etc in the little zip section at the top. I've been carrying my bag with me on the tube every day this year and its very convenient . highly recommend setting up your kit in a similar situation - plus it helps when you go on holiday. Just pick up the bag and off you go!

I have the Lowepro Slingshot, and I am really happy with it. It holds my camera, two lenses, lots of filters and cards, etc.

And, no breaks!

There are 3 compartments - the middle one I keep a prime and my camera with a wide angle on it, and the other 2 compartments I have 2 lenses in each, either a large zoom and a kit lens or a wide angle and a prime.

There's a zipped pocket to the top that holds shutter locks, cables and a tripod mount.

There's also the memory card and battery slots in the front pocket which is deceivingly large. I've had 3 batteries, step down rings, a memory card in case, a big bunch of house keys, my large wallet, a few bits of makeup and an iPod in one go in there.

Phew!

Wow you fit a lot in there!

I have good news, I just found a card! Just typing about it gave me an idea where it may have been and there it was.
So I may not have lost any cards while out and about as I am not sure how many I had. I did number them some time ago, but that has rubbed off with the constant use. I have 5 SD and 5 Compact flash and I do believe I had the same quantity of each.

A friend of mine who is a professional shooter, says that photographers are bagaholics. You think the most recent bag will be the last one, perfect for all your needs...but it never is. The one I use, I bought big enough to carry what I wanted, but I actually find it too big and heavy. All that space to fill, "I'll put that in just in case"

I have a Lowepro backpack, and about 3 other bags. When possible (weather) I wear shorts that have the side pockets, jam a lens (18-55, and 55-200) in each pocket, and go. I've never had to take more than the card in my camera with me. The camera is simply around my shoulder. With the exception of taking a fill flash, what else do you need?

I tend to lose lens caps (ahemmmm....misplace) by the dozen. I really need to get one of those tether thingy's.

wow chris, thats pretty hard core... you've never had a problem with the lenses in your pockets hitting anything?

When I was shooting 35mm, I ALWAYS kept a UV filter on my lenses so that anything got scratched, it would be cheap to replace.

Of course, I have not advanced beyond a point and shoot in this digital era, but I think that is probably still a good idea for a DLSR.

I've purchased a Lowepro Nova 180 ( http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/75402/show.html) as I nearly had a really big accident with my old backpack case, the zip was breaking, and the camera was hanging out whilst walking round. I dread to think of what would have happened if it had of fallen!

I really like the 180, it fits my EOS + Battery Grip + Flashgun + Telephoto + Kit Lens in, along with CF cards, filters, lens cloth etc...

It's also handy for changing lenses.

Nicely done Chris!
I have multiple backpacks and messenger bags, but I went out the other day using only a purse slightly bigger than a handbag. Fit my camera, a lens and my flash with extra batteries and cards, PLUS all my purse contents. If I had taken out the purse stuff, I definitely could have fit another lens. And besides, once I started shooting, the camera wasn't in the purse anyway. Much cheaper than purchasing a fancy bag [and more stylish ;)].

I work out in the field a majority of the time, so I need a mini office/studio.

I purchased the Tamrac Aero Speed Pack 75 Dual Access Photo Backpack

It works perfect for me holding my two camera bodies, 5 lenses, filters and accessories, as well as my laptop.
Believe it or not, there is still room to spare!
