I'm not a professional, far from it, and I've got the d5000. It's a step up for not much more money. And I love it! It's just fun to play with, and still get great results. That's just my opinion though.
@moncooga thanks what excatly is bad about it? @sdpace do you have any problems with it at all? @sarahbear9995 I'm on a tight budget lol I wonder what this one would be in comparsion to yours
From what I am told...you are very limited for the money you spend. You cannot "grow into it". It is already obsolete. The flash sync is terrible.Video...who cares. It will become a shelf display in no time.
i haven't had any problems....i'm just an amateur and just starting to learn....
i did some research before buying it and i had read that this was a good beginner dslr.....
@moncooga - hahaha, edsel! What a great reference. There is one for same near my parents in NY. It is fairly cheap, in great shape, and amazingly cool. But its an edsel. :-P
@bsingleton0010 i havent had any problems at all -- except when i forget my memory card. : / the only drawback I would say is that if you're used to a point and shoot, there is no "on-screen" viewfinder on the D3000...you have to use the eyepiece (Nikon calls this "live view." I think the D5000 does have that feature though.
@apepper The D3000 replaced the D40. The D40 is a great camera, and has better image capabilities that the D3000 for the money. Megapixels? Who cares. I have a 10 mp D40x, and prefer my 2.74mp D1H over it hands down.
Megapixels is the only improvement the D3000 has over the D40, and the D40 has better flash sync, which is , at least to me, more important.
I am not a fan of a still camera being able to shoot video. Big deal. I have a P&S that can do that well for $84.
@bsingleton0010
i have it, and it serves it's purpose well as a starter's camera. for its price, i'm quite happy with the images, plus it is very light (i lugged one around a 16km run to take pictures of the other runners, without any discomfort). while it certainly does give you good enough pictures, there are some options that are missing (google has a repository for them).
but as you said that you're not into the pro stuff, this may very well be the camera for you. however, add a little more to your budget and you can get the D3100 (same camera but with HD video capability and LiveView) or the D5000 (HD video, LiveView which works well with its tilting screen---very handy for experimental shots or difficult angles). hth. :D
my vote is D90, it can use the older lenses as well as the newer lenses. it also shoots video, and has live view. i have one and really enjoy it, and being able to use more lenses than the newer ones is a plus.
The D3000 had horrible reviews... for good reason from what I've heard. Can't say from experience, only consumer level camera of Nikon I have experience with is the D70 and D80. D3100 replaced it. I'd opt for either that one, or something else (don't be scared of used!)
This camera was trashed by the photog commnity.
I love Nikon's, but this is heir Edsel, or so I am told. I am sure it does a good job, but there are many better for the price.
Save for a D5000, or a D7100.
