When do you know You're good enough to sell?

I am only a hobbyist, but I am gradually gaining more experience and professional grade tools in an effort to improve. (Along with a few classes along the way.) At some point I would like to market my work to support my growing gear budget.

How do you know when you are good enough to be on the market, and not embarrass yourself? I would never market myself as a Pro, or go out for hire. Only post my best shots for sale online.

I`m curious to see the answers... I know I`ll most likely never be able to say that I make a living out of photography, because I`m too much of a slow learner and budget-less.

We are our own worst critics - I still don't think I am anywhere near good enough to sell but apparently I must be because I have and do.

All you can do is give it a go

If you want to know if you're good enough to sell, either set up a website that has the ability to sell your photo's, or try submitting them to a stock agency. Then time will tell! :-)

Two of my friends sell their work. Both through their own websites. I think if you can set a web-page up pretty cheaply and place your photos on their, you just never know.
One friend offers her work in many different formats as well, ie postcards, canvas as well as prints of many sizes.
Good luck with it :o)

Art is so subjective. Someone with a certain interest similar to yours may love your work and pay lots of money for it, others may not. It could even come to something so silly as the colors in your picture match the countertops in someone's kitchen! The only way to find out is to give it a shot! Good luck :)

@blightygal - How and what is that Stock Agency? how is the process? Thanks

@blueburn11 Just google 'photo stock agency' or 'photo library agency' as there are a few out there - getty etc and follow their instuctions. They normally ask for a few sample images sent in large size and then they let you know if they want your work or not. Each one will have their own way of doing it tho..

Check out SmugMug. It seems to be a good place to sell your prints.

And here are some fellow 365ers discussing it:

Good luck!
