I dropped and BROKE my camera today. One of my pregnancy symptoms has been not being able to keep a tight grip on things. I just never imagined it would be my camera. I am totally heartbroken. It was a "gift" from my late Grandparents, and I feel a deep attachment to the camera. When it fell, it was top-heavy due to the external flash, and the weight of the flash and impact of it hitting the floor, broke the camera flash right off. It exposed the circuit board and wires. I am wishing and hoping that it can be repaired, and for a decent price. I am so sad, my sons birthday is coming up this month, and the new baby will be here soon too.
Anyone have a similar thing happen, and were able to have it fixed?
Does it still turn on and try to work, there's a decent chance it'll function with the hot shoe damaged, the hot shoe might still work as well, simply the mounting has broken...
I've fixed a lot of point and shoots by hand but never had a broken SLR to worry about, luckily.
@killerjackalope I actually haven't tried even turning on the camera. I didn't want to cause further damage by doing so. I will inspect it a little more closely tonight when my husband is here to help dry my tears, if it is more than just the flash.
Thank you.
@marydreams Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that! Last August I drove to Colorado to visit my daughter and stopped along the way to attempt to take pictures of the massive lightning storm I was witnessing (but I failed). My camera seemed to work just fine then, but when I got to her house an hour later and picked up my camera to take a picture of the sunset, I heard this weird grinding noise. When I looked closer at my lens, the shutters were flopping freely at will. I was heartsick. Fortunately I had my telephoto lens with me and I could take pictures with it, so the trip wasn't a total photo op loss. I was able to send my lens in and have it repaired, but it meant I was without my lens for almost three weeks.
Can you get a cheap point and shoot to fill in while your other camera is (hopefully) being repaired? I find that having a point and shoot with me at all times eliminates lost photo ops due to not having your camera with you when you need it.
When you say wires are exposed, is that just under the hotshoe plate on the camera rather than the external flash itself? If so, and no other damage has been done internally to the camera on impact (sometimes its not visible) then its pretty easy and cheap to get fixed. I had something similar when a rugby ball hit my flash when snapping a PR peice for a rugby team.
Aww, I'm so sorry! I completely understand; I dropped EVERYTHING when I was pregnant. i really really hope you can get it fixed, but in the long run we know you will be okay. :) Congrats on the baby, though!!
@indiannie_jones@dejongdd@laceyjogautreau Thank you all so much for your encouraging words. This has just been a devastating day for me. @blightygal Yes, it is just the hotshoe, as far as I can tell. That is great news and gives me hope that it is an easy repair. Thank you so much!
Hope it can be fixed... have you considered renting a camera for the birthday event? Many camera shops in my area offer rentals, as well as some repairs..
@silverhorn@celticmystyc@niara Thank you all so much. My husband called Nikon's repair center and got instructions on what to do. We have to send the camera to them and they will email me with the cost to repair it, which I have to approve before they get started. I am so relieved!

Keep us posted on your dilemma! Hugs to you!
