Poster Prints?

February 16th, 2011
If I wanted to print out one of my pictures in a poster size-how big does the file need to be for it to look decent at that large of a print? I never shot with the intention of doing such large prints but I have one I would love to hang in our media room. I just dont know how good it would look. Probably just a 20X30.

You can go to snapfish.com and upload it, then it will make a suggestion for the file size that you need to have to print whatever size you choose :)

Minimum print resolution for any photo is 100 DPI. So, for a 30" poster, you'd need a file no smaller than 3000 pixels on the long side.

However, that is minimum print resolution. A photo of that size will look kind soft. Maximum print resolution is 300 DPI, which would mean 9000 pixels on the long side.

Now, no digital camera shoots at that resolution. But the good news is that a lot of companies that print posters from your photography have advanced computer programs that can render your photos in great resolution.

Long story short, bare minimum resolution is 3000x2000 for a 30"x20" poster.
