so, im looking to upgrade to a better quality lens, in mind that i have a budget... so i can still afford college :)
at the moment i'm just working on the basic 18-55 mm f/3.5- 5.6 Is.... a lovely birthday gift from the parents BUT
im about to leave for Costa Rica, and afterwards a month in Colorado, everything from bird watching to butterfly museums :)
in all practicality i want something with a better zoom, that makes for a great image, quickly... but from there i am lost.....

Hi Renata, check a couple of of the threads that have been posted within the last couple of weeks regarding lens and budgets. A lot of folks have suggested the best bang for the buck is a 50mm fixed ("prime") lens with a big aperture, 1.8 or 1.4. It will actually help your composition skills, and allow you to shoot in much lower light than a 3.5.

The 50mm f/1.8 is a great place to start. Sure, it's a prime lens, but it's silly sharp and only $135 new.

The best zoom lens you'll get for the price is the Tamron 24-75mm f/2.8. Even that will run you about $300 used, but it's the best zoom you'll get for the money.

what camera are you using?

If I needed only one lens for a journey, then my 70 - 300mm would be the lens of choice. I can shoot macro, portrait and birds with the one lens.

I don't know what camera body you use but I just picked up a Sigma 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6, not a fast lens- but it was really inexpensive. I picked mine up on Amazon for US$89 new. It has a macro function and the range is perfect what what I will be using it for. If you have the dollars to spare- I would go with a faster lens for sure, f/2.8 or below, but it will cost you. Also, just want to say that I have a 50mm f/1.8, also bought through Amazon (US$150) that I absolutely love- I have rarely taken it off my camera since I bought it in December.
