Is this lens worth buying at $275 for my Nikon D5000

February 20th, 2011
Hello once again, as i have been enjoying the Dubai Shopping Festival where prices are low. Is this lens worth buying for my Nikon D5000?
The NIKKOR 55-200mm AF-S DX f/4-5.6 IF ED filter 52mm Hood HB-37

what is this IF ED filter 52mm and this Hood HB-37?
Is this price good enough to spend?

I will be asking again some advice and also some information about this filter an Hood thing.what photo this lens could give?

Thanks again for sharing your views and hopefully i was able to clarify things with your help and but this lens the soonest possible time.

Thanks

What is the lens? The filter is 52mm with a hood, but you never said what lens it was?
NIKKOR AF-S DX f/4-5.6 IF ED with a filter (what kind of filter...the IF ED is part of the lens) and a hood. That's all you mentioned.

-ED elements reduce chromatic aberrations providing superior optical performance even at maximum aperture.
-Internal Focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing and great body balance.
Those definitions come right from the Nikon website.

@mattyb - OOPss sorry. it's a 55-200mm lens.

I think he's asking about the telephoto 55-200mm... http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Camera-Lenses/2166/AF-S-DX-VR-Zoom-NIKKOR-55-200mm-f%252F4-5.6G-IF-ED.html

I'm asking the same - Is this telephoto good enough? Or is better to start to save money for the 70-300?

I have never used that one, but I have the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED and I LOVE it. It's very sharp, the VR is great and it's not too heavy. My only complaint with it (or the one you have mentioned) is the variable aperture and necessity for quality light. It's very difficult to use in low light situations especially when it's zoomed all the way in (5.6 is the lowest you can go). However, when I take it outside for nature stuff (animals etc...) it's AWESOME. The 300mm zoom opens up a lot of opportunities. So the question you need to ask yourself is, what are you going to use it for. If it's for outdoor stuff I would say go for it but if you can save up some more money, go for the 70-300 or an even more expensive 2.8 throughout. For indoor stuff (around the house type of things, go with the cheaper 35mm 1.8 or the 50mm(1.8 or 1.4). My opinion (and I ignored everyone else suggested to me) is to save up until you can afford a GREAT lens instead of buying a bunch of mediocre lenes.

The one you mentioned isn't a spectacular deal. According to the Nikon website it has a street value of $249.95 so don't get all blurry eyed with the 'deal' you're getting. If you really want the zoom then at least look around because you can get the same lens used on EBay or a camera shop for a good price.

All of my pictures posted on this website have either been taken with a 35mm 1.8 or my 70-300mm VR lens. Take a peak if you want some examples.

@mattyb, I agree totally with you. Thanks a lot. I will save for a 70-300, even I could buy it on next Christmas.
Rhoiz, I'm sorry to interrupt your discussion.

@mattyb Thanks Matty, I really want a lens that could shoot a subject so close even you're far. also I want to have some wildlife shot and capture some action of the animals.

@vvpe - Thanks for sharing. yes it's the telephoto lens 55-200mm

The Nikkor 18-200mm here in Dubai is $470. is that price good enough to spend for that lens?
February 20th, 2011
@vvpe - No problem veronica, whatever that is being discuss here is also important. please feel free. Thanks

I have this lens and I have to say I don't love it. I agree with MattyB and I would save the money you would spend on this and put it towards a 2.8. You'll get much sharper images.

@ksphoto - Thanks Katrina.

@mattyb Hey, can you do me a favor? For just one weekend?

Rent the Nikon 300mm f/2.8. It'll cost you, but it will be worth it for this. Rent the lens. Shoot some photos. Shoot the exact same photos with your 70-300mm.

After you've done this, I dare you to come back and tell me the 70-300mm lens is sharp. You'll never look at your lens the same way again.

might want to read this... :)

though for $275, it's a bit pricey. here in manila, you can get one for about Php6000-8000...

@jasonbarnette Ha....I'm afraid to do that because I am sure you're 100% right but who has $5000 to spend on a lens. If money was no problem, I'd have a whole closet full of 'toys' and start up a business. If you have that lens, I'm SOOO jealous. I'm having enough trouble trying to talk my wife into letting me spend $1000 for the 105mm Macro lens or the 24-70 2.8. Those are the next 2 on my wife list.

@mattyb - he he he he you need to do lot of work to convince your wife Matty. good luck to the next 2 on your wife list, just ensure it will not go to a lower rank on her list. he he he he. Thanks Matty

@nellycious - Thanks Arnel.

@nellycious - hmmmm I guess in case I'd rather buy this lens there in Manila once i go for vacation. because that price range you said is only $194 if i will convert it through dirhams to dollars. nice thanks Arnel.

That price seems high - I would suggest putting the info on google shopping to compare prices. I have the 55-200 and it's great, however, I'll be getting the 300 at Christmas (after I get my 55mm f/1.4 for my birthday)

@shanander - Thanks Shannon, it's quite expensive, as others suggested to save the money and just add a little more for a much better lens. so i just hold the buying for a while.
