Frames in Photoshop

February 20th, 2011
Sorry if this seems like a lame question.

In Picnik I can quickly put a border around a photo (see below),

I have just got a copy of Photoshop and cannot find out how to do this and it's driving my up the wall! Can someone please put my out of my misery!!!

Hi there Peter!
There are several ways to do this in photoshop. There are some simple frames in the actions section if you want to try them.

The easiest way I find to do them though is by changing the canvas size. To do this first copy the layer of your photo and then go to the copy at the bottom. Click on the Image Tab and scroll down to Canvas size. Make sure the relative button is selected and simply type in the size you want, making sure you select a colour from the given drop down menu. You can then add a drop shadow to the top layer by double clicking it (or select layer properties) and add a bevel/emboss. You can play around with this to get what you want.

If you want more than one border (to make matte effect) simply repeat the entire process, always making sure that you select the bottom layer to change canvas size on. In this case you need to copy the previous layer you adjusted before going to the bottom one so that you can apply drop shadows, etc as you go.

Good luck!

Go to Image> Resize> Canvas Size, enter the correct numbers in the boxes (try 0.5-1.5cm for a wider line & 0.2 or so for a fine line).
Ensure the relative box is checked & select your colour from the canvas extension colour box at the bottom.
Do it once for each line you want & build the border up as appropriate - you'll see I normally use 2 lines, but 1 or 3 on occasions!

Have you tried going through the awesome tutorials on www.Lynda.com ? Lots of them are free. I'm in your same camp. Bought PSElements a month ago - still haven't used it!

@pete21

I just posted instructions for this on my picasa album. https://picasaweb.google.com/KezzamCreations/HowToCreateAFrameInPhotoshop?authkey=Gv1sRgCMbS_p6Bkcv-cg#

There are loads of free borders around on the internet too.
All you do with them is copy them onto a new layer (on top of your photo) and change the blend modes to suit. These can be loads of fun but sometimes you still need to extend the canvas size (like in instructions) so that border goes onto area outside your pic. Have fun. Photoshop has so much more potential than any other program I have used.

I totally agree that PS makes a big production about something that should be easy. That's why I use ImageFramer3 for the Mac which I downloaded as part of a bundle and which does nothing but frames. You just make it the final step after you have processed your photo in any editing program.

Here's a freebie for you to use in Photoshop. I just followed a lesson online to make it. Simply place a photo into the file and move the photo layer in between the frame layer and background and hey presto, you have a nice timber frame.

Gee that sounds complicated. I'd be staying with Picnik if I were you!
