I have used this lens before. Just to let you know how most people feel about it, my mentor/friend/first boss in photography gave me this lens cause he just didn't want it anymore.
If you think about it, zooming out to the full 300mm will force the aperture to an f/5.6. Go back through your photos. You will notice you can only shoot f/5.6 at 100 ISO on sunny, absolutely cloudless days. You won't be able to use this lens on cloudy days or night at all.
The autofocus is slow. You won't be shooting sports or anything else fast moving with this lens. The motor is just too slow to keep up.
The quality is about 70% that of the more expensive, f/2.8 lenses. If you are really strapped for cash, this lens will get you 300mm focal range shots, but you won't be printing 16"x20" posters and hanging on your wall.
@bsingleton0010 Brandon the 70-300 vr nikkor is a great little zoom lens that I have used. It is sharp, pretty light weight, and can be found for around $400 USD used in great shape.
