Some Bizarre Camera Issues (Canon 10D)

March 2nd, 2011
Last night my camera did some very odd things...

First off it now auto-rotates images to portrait in the viewer, something it has never done before, I think it senses the portrait ones based on what position the external flash is in.

That only creates another set of questions since it's an old speedlite 420 EZ, which doesn't even work with TTL on the camera, manual only... So the idea of it knowing what orientation to use is even weirder.

Oh yeah and it doesn't stop there. I always start off with the same 512MB memory card, which gets between 170-200 images on it at max resolution, suddenly I got 293 images on to the card, same settings and the images on the computer are all around the normal size.

The only thing that could explain it a little is the better lighting, I was using a lower ISO compared to usual, which means less noise.

Still the auto-rotate, which doesn't appear on the computer files, only onboard the camera... How is my camera adding features to itself at random?

In addition, it's worth noting this camera is no longer supported by Canon updates. Not to mention that when I connect it directly to the computer I have to use PTP mode, which means it couldn't update itself anyway...

Hmm, well at least your camera still functions as a camera! But it sounds like you are dealing with software/firmware of the camera.

Also you might wanna check to make sure you are shooting the same 'size' still in your camera's menu. The camera usually estimates the number of photos anyway but to go from 200 to 300 might mean you are shooting at a less quality.

Maybe try this - http://web.canon.jp/imaging/EOS10D/10D_firmware-e.html

Hope this helps!

@andrew_pavlik Thanks, the size is still on the same setting, however I figured out the autorotation, what should have been worrying me is the fact that it wasn't functioning before...

I've been going through the images today and they actually look better than usual, which is a little odd but pleasing...

Ive personally been using an older 20d for awhile and I know that unless there is a lot of light it does not like having the iso above 400(for quality wise).

@andrew_pavlik I meant they looked better as in less jpeg artefacts but the 10D's just the same, it was nice shooting with enough light to go down to 200 and keep the flash as a filler instead of main light...

I think I've only ever used the h setting once and the results are terrible, though even at 1600 it's pretty rough...
