Camera shopping

March 2nd, 2011
Okay. I am basically working with a very very crappy camera that is almost entirely broken (the entire screen view is gone and the focus is weird). My birthday is in the summer and my parents are going to put money towards a new camera, and since I'll be going to Canada for the first time this summer, and most likely studying abroad in the fall or spring semester of next year I was this to be a good investment. Now here's the thing. Money. After clicking on some of the links to what camera's most of you are using, my eyes bulged. I don't have that much money to be spending on a camera, basically.

What I'm looking for...
really nothing too professional. I really just want something with some of the features I never really had in a camera before. I like the idea of being able to take shot after shot (what is that called?) and having a camera with a good focus really.

The camera really doesn't have to be too fancy, but I want it to be a definite from this broken thing I've been working with.

THIS

Don't get me wrong, it was good for what I used it for, capturing a bunch of prom photos and all that. But now as I go on a few adventures, I want something that will keep up.

So here's the rough part.
Price range?
I'm really trying to stick between 200-300. So any help?

So far I was thinking of
This

What do you know/think about it? Any better suggestions.

Vanessa I have a Panasonic FZ38 (which has now been replaced by http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-FZ40-Digital-Stabilized-3-0-Inch/dp/B003WJR694/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1299111552&sr=1-2-spell). I'm really pleased with it, it seems to be nice and sharp and has a good Leica lens. It has the ability to shoot in RAW (although I have yet to explore this properly) and a great zoom.

It has a lot of the features of a dSLR but obviously it does have its limitations too. At some point I want to upgrade but I just can't afford it and in the meantime I'm more than happy with the results I have got.

I'm afraid I don't really know much about the Nikon, I would recommend reading some reviews. Whilst I would love a Nikon dSLR while I was looking at bridges the Panasonic came out on top compared to the Nikon I was eyeing up (it wasn't the one you have been thinking of).

Good luck hunting :)

I have the Canon s95 vicdaddy recommends. Look at my photos to see if you like what you see. It is compact and excellent in low light. (I never need the flash) The one disadvantage--not so good at distance.
