I have a Canon EOS Rebel XT that I purchased about 5 years ago, I am still using the kit lenses...I know bummer! Anyway, I am pursuing a career in newborn/children/maternity photography and I either want to purchase new lenses for the Rebel or get a new camera.
I was at the store playing around with both Nikon and Canon....I am torn, I loved the features of Nikon, but I have always used canon.
I would love to hear some comments about what to do..new camera or new lenses.
What do you photographers recommend??
I bought the Canon 60D a few months back and love it! I had tried out the 7D while at the Grand Canyon. Canon had set up a nature hike along the rim and we were able to shoot with their different cameras! I loved the 7D, but was a little pricey for me at this time (since I'm new at this). So I started the research and it just so happened Canon came out with the 60D which has a lot of the 7D features, but at a better price point! I love Canon, but know Nikon is great too, so good luck with your decision and enjoy your new purchase when you get it!!
I think if you love Nikon, but just feel loyal to Canon, then you should probably go with your feelings and get a Nikon. Especially since you aren't attached to many lenses, or anything. I promise, as a Canon user, that I won't be mad at you. :) But @indiannie_jones might. ;)
I've had a Nikon for two years and I love it. I'll stick with Nikon. :) No worries, it's JUST a camera. They all function the same. They all serve the same purpose/goal for us: PICTURES. :)
If you feel that you want a change then go for Nikon. But if your happy with the way Canon works and it works for you, you continue with Canon. These 2 brands are good brands and you will never loose if you pick either 1 of them. At the end of the day you will be the one shooting.
Canon vs. Nikon is like Toyota vs. Honda. Both are very good but it depends on which "feels right" in your hand. You are used to how the Canon works and where the buttons are. There would be a big re-learning curve for the Nikon. For example the exposure meter is opposite.
I recently upgraded from the XT (also 5 years old) to the 7D but kept all my lenses (85mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.4 and Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8)
Just stick to what you're used to. You can do the same things with either one, but the interface is what will be different. If you go with canon then you won't have to relearn very much at all, and you can spend more time trying out the new features.
one thing that helped me make a choice was that a lot depends upon where you shoot... i do a lot of nature shots and take my camera hiking with me into the mountains... so when i was choosing between the nikon and canon i was told that the canon has a lot studier body than the nikon and that if i dropped it (hope that never happens) it will be able to withstand much more impact than a nikon' body. i love my canon 30d...
I would upgrade the Canon if you want a new camera with new features. But actually my cousin has the XT and she got a new lens for it and says its like a completely different camera! So the choice is up to you depending on how much money you want to spend.
I personally prefer nikon..I mean, I used to be all partial to canon, but then I got my nikon, and I like it too much not to favor nikon! It's really easy to use and everything! And..Ashton Kutcher is the spokesperson, so that just adds to it ;) hahahahahah!
I struggled with the Canon vs. Nikon debate when I bought my first Dslr. You can't go wrong with either. Ultimately, it boils down to what feels best in your hands. I have small hands, and the Nikon (D90) just fit me better.
Both and other brands will do. But there are now some functions to reduce the shutter sound that can be very useful for babies. Also, apart from new lenses, Canon lenses tend to focus more quiet than Nikon.
If it's me, I'd go for 60D and a couple of quiet autofocus lenses.

Hi! I had a thread about this a few weeks back located here:

It may be helpful. :-) Personally, I've always been a huge fan of Nikon but I've heard so many good things about both!
Personally I use Nikon and I'm happy with it.

With that said, Canons feel like cheap plastic toys to me.
And I assure you, whatever photos you take with XXX brand can be taken with YYY brand just as well.
