Leica X1 or Fuji X100

March 3rd, 2011
Ok so @hmgphotos was sick of the Cakon debt... so I thought I would start one that matters... because we all know you cannot do 'street' photog with a 500 'blad. I need a new camera.

I am really torn between the two. Thoughts?

The Fuji has the hybrid view finder and fixed lens (which I think is a nice bonus) and is a stop faster.

The Leica has the 'red dot' and it is made by Leica directly... it still has the lovely glass and a certain magic.

I have a few weddings this summer and I don't want to drag the SLR/DSLR/MF gear with me as I have found babies need a lot of stuff!!! So space is at a premium...

I'd lean towards the fuji mainly for the faster and fixed lens. But if I were in the market for a camera like that, I'd probably hold out to see what Nikon does. They're supposed to be introducing a mirrorless EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable lens) camera this month. It might be a bit bigger, but it'd be nice if they also introduced some sort of pancake 30ish mm lens with it.

@icywarm personally, i think the leica X1 is gimmicky, and what i do not like about it is the extending lens barrel which looks a bit tacky for a leica. the fujifilm X100 on the other hand, is a work of art married with bleeding edge tech. it's a straightforward fixed focal length camera that actually makes sense. i think you can see what side of the fence i'm leaning on. :D

The Leica X1 is made at the Leica factory in Germany and has a fixed lens of 24 mm. I have this one and love it, but I would not use it as my only camera for a wedding shoot. It takes fantastic shots. My only con is it is slow to auto focus. I have taken some great shots with this camera. You do need to invest in the hand grip. It does work great for me when I don't want to drag my SLR around. @icywarm

I reserved one X100 already, should arrive by the end of the month. I have also seen many great photos taken by Leica X1, but I already use M system, and X1 is too close to M.

With the current firmware, Leica X1's autofocus is a bit slow though (may not be suitable for weddings). Some said the next firmware for X1 will increase the autofocus speed significantly.

@seattle have a try with ThumbsUp link for X1. It's doesn't make the camera bulky IMO.

@viranod This looks great I am going to give it a try. Thanks for the tip.

@sudweeks IF I go EVIL it will be pentax... but not sold on the EVIL thing... to close to SLR... I need something that will NOT need IL and the full EV doesn't do much for me... but interesting that Nikon is joining the frey...

@seattle yes my bad, and I edited above... it is made in Germany... it was late and I was thinking of the Lecia lens in the Pan water-proof camera....

sigh... ok so I may want it still....

I have been informed from the place where I normally buy camera/lenses in Bangkok is that they will receive 50 bodies, and 30 have already been reserved! Initially the first lot should arrive by mid March, but due to some final changes (firmware??) they will aim for 25 March. May be the same in the rest of the world.

I have no doubt that in superior hands the Leica is capable of superior results - though how those results will compare to the X100 remain to be seen. I've certainly been especially impressed by some of the pre-production high ISO samples from the X100. However, based on the reviews I have read, the Leica has very slow operation, an inferior viewing screen and requires skilful post processing to achieve the best results. The Fuji just seems to be the nicer and better thought out tool to use. For your wedding I would also consider that the X100's sweep panorama mode might have its place and (sacrilege I know) perhaps even the option to capture reasonable quality video clips? Judging by the amount of interest in the camera and the number of pre-orders, most people also consider the Fuji to be the superior tool. I would imagine that many of those who would buy the Fuji, could probably spring for the Leica, if they felt it to be worthwhile.

@viranod interesting that he compares it to the M9... I would have thought the X1 would be more the comparison...

@icywarm My guess is that he doesn't use or have access to X1 and just compare X100 with M9 + 35 cron asph and probably 35 pre asph vesions (like version 4 and before). Sounds interesting though. 35 cron asph is razor sharp and bokeh is harder than the pre asph version, so X100 may be something between Leica's 35 asph and older versions, perhaps with smoother blur.

@indiannie_jones yeas or Canikon... just an easy way to refer to the big two... because... really they are almost the same... kinda like the difference between toyota and honda or chev and ford... sometime you just need to drive a BMW ....

I am so happy that all works out... made in japan cameras/cars verse german cars/cameras...

Viranod, I live in LA but am coming to Bangkok April 21 en route to cambodia. I am dying to get my hands on a X100 but they haven't even landed in the US yet and waiting lists are long. Could you please tell me where in Bangkok you have yours reserved as I'd like to contact them to do the same. Thanks! Jeff @viranod @viranod
