Need suggestions for a good Point-and-Shoot

March 3rd, 2011
My niece wants a good point-and-shoot camera to take pictures of her toddler and her soon-to-be-born baby. She mentioned she wants something that captures “action” as her daughter is pretty busy. I’m fairly new to all of this stuff and am still learning my way around my DSLR so I’m going to have to do some research before I can give her suggestions. Does anyone a good point-and-shoot that they love? Please share!

I know there are many to choose from, The one I have does a wonderful job. I am impressed in many ways, one of which it's ability in low light. With out flash. I have had it for four years (I think) and still have not used some of the functions. It has video and GREAT zoom capabilities. I recently purchased a canon rebel dslr, and I find myself grabbing the point and shoot for most of my pictures. 99% of the pictures in my album are with the point and shoot. Battery usage(two aa's) I feel last for many pictures Cannon Power Shot SX100is 10x optical zoom 8,0 mega pixel
There are newer cameras out there now that more than likely do more than this one, but I am 100% happy with what I have. (The recent moon shots are with the dslr.) I know you will most likely get many more opinions

I love my Sony DSC-HX1. 20x zoom, 10-fire rapid shot in three different speeds, panoramic capability. Easy-to-use "Intelligent mode" makes all the decisions for you, or you can play around with manual settings, if you choose.

I am always pushing water proof cameras as great P&S... since well they take good pictures and they will survive a trip into the purse, pool, ski hill, that spilled drink, all good times to have a water proof camera...

Panasonic or Pentax both make lovely cameras. Panasonic has a Lecia Lens. Pentax's new (late March through May sometime) Adventure Proof camera has great specs, but the current W90 is no slouch... all are under $400 (likely under $250 if you find a sale)

that's my two cents...

Or you can look at the X1 or X100 both are $1500 + but great cameras... but maybe not for your typical P&S base...

I was told the Canon G12 is pretty awesome and it's now on my wish list. But can't say that I have any experience with it personally. It's in the $400 range I believe.

i have a nikon coolpix 4000 that i really enjoy. it was less than $100, touch screen, and videos (didn''t know it did either of those things) also takes sd cards and i have used it with my eye-fi card. i bought it just as a oops camera, meaning if i didn't have my dslr i could still grab a shot. also due to certain circumstances, it is much easier for me to carry that around right now. i have been very impressed with it. olympus also has several good models, and there are a couple that are water proof. i opted for the nikon because it was cheaper, and fit my needs. so far i have been a lot hepper than i expected i would be with it, and the battery lasts a lot longer than i expected it to, and the display can be seen easily in daylight.

I love my Panasonic Lumix LX3. The came out with the LX5 recently and everyone loves it.

Panasonic Lumix are great P&S cameras. I got a new TZ6 on eBay for about £110 about 6 months ago. It's not a current model but it's just as good as the later TZ7/9/10. In the USA it's the Panasonic DMC-ZS1.

Apart from that I've always used Canon - their P&S stuff (apart from the real low end stuff) is excellent too.

I use the Nikon Coolpix L110 and i LOVE it. It has a great sport's setting to capture motion....it is an awesome camera. I would highly recommend it.

I have a canon sx120 and I'm beginning to really love it now that I'm learning to use the manual mode. I was unhappy with it at first ONLY because it's a bit bulkier than what I want to carry around (when added to the diaper bag, purse and assorted other goods my 3 kids hand off to me) but it takes great photos, and has a decent zoom for when the kids are running away from me.
I also have a canon sd1300 that I love. It's small, fits perfectly in my pocket or any spare room that may be in the purse or diaper bag. Easily held with one hand when the baby is in the other, etc. It does not have a full manual mode, though.

There are a lot of good recommendations here, so sorry for just making things more confusing, but I just want to chime in with another. The Canon S95 is a great little P&S. It's got most of the features of its bigger brother (the G12), but in a smaller package. The controls are also unique (in a very good way) among P&S cameras.

I'm a Nikon DSLR shooter, but I've always had a Canon P&S. I think they are among the best in terms of picture quality.

To add another voice and another recomendation I don't think you can go wrong with a canon powershot

i love my canon powershot!

I have to say ditto to the Canon Powershot collection, I've had 3 and have convinced several friends to buy one and none of us have regretted it. I also like the fact that you can pick one that has as many or as few options as you like/need.

Another for the Canon Powershot. I've got the G9 & I still use it quite a bit. It has never let me down after several years. It can do amazing things, all in such a small package. Downside is the price point. I think the G series is a bit expensive for the casual user at $400 - $500, but if you want to do more than just take snapshots, it's well worth the investment. For me, it's a wonderful alternative to carrying your dSLR & gear in certain situations where you need to be less conspicuous. Just slip the G9 (10, 11 or 12) into your pocket and go!

That being said, the user needs to be comfortable with the camera themselves. If they want something to set on Automatic and push the shutter, then that's the type of camera they should seek out. No need paying for features that you'll never use. I'd suggest physically looking at a few electronics stores to see what's comfortable & make a decision based on that.

I have a canon SX120 and i love it, its my first camera and i find it suits all my needs, you can set everything manually or use the different capture modes. I didnt have a lot of money to spend on a camera so i did some reasearch and this camera was mentioned a lot. It cost £99 and im over the moon with it..

Michelle's whole project so far is done by using a point & shoot, but she uses the manual settings on it. She has achieved very good results seen here:-

It's a Kodak easyshare and they are quite cheap to pick up.

@farmboy9155 - you certainly have got some great shots. Are you using yours on automatic or manual?

Sorry to jump in on your thread Lisabelle.
