I bumped the curb today, while staring at a cool oak tree that had been split in two, thinking what a cool shot it would make & looking for some where to park!
It's not the 1st time either.....please tell me I'm not alone!!!
Haha! I was driving yesterday with a friend and was driving riciculously slow behind two police on horseback because I was trying to snap some photos of them. They finally got annoyed by us stalking them and waved us forward.
I'm definitely guilty of this. I have to drive to university from home like during break and what not and it's a 7 hour drive. I've actually pulled over several times to get a photo...it's ridiculous xD
Oh yeah! On the 8 hour drive to my parents house with my 3 kids I gotta do something to entertain myself. lol I have gotten some of my best shots while driving. Don't tell my husband....
Put your camera on a tripod & tie it to the passenger seat as I did here:
obviously it works fine on normal length exposures, not just long oneslike this - but you obviously have to set up the camera before you set off & just use the remote release to fire the shutter...
Or do as @woodsy999 did here:
and just stick your hand out of the drivers window to get the shot! lol
all the time. We still have a lot of snow on the side of the road so most times there is no way to pull over to stop and then I get really annoyed. If hubby knew .....oh dear !!!
I am absolutely guilty of this. Where there is no way to pull off of the road (safely), I have to tell myself to keep my eyes on the road and keep driving.
Oh yeah! I saw a great shot and stomped on the brakes without checking traffic behind me. I wound up brake-checking a loaded semi hauling water. Thankfully all I rec'd was the 1-finger wave.
@sburbidge My pickup (Chevy Silverado) has a "passenger entry assist" bar above the glove box. Mount my D60 on a Gorillapod, and wrap the 'pod around that bar. Set up the remote shutter, and your camera is set up looking directly out the windshield. It's real easy to get decent shots without any of the vehicle (or that 'arc' where the windshield wipers don't clean the glass) in the frame.
I plan to run a setup like this quite a bit this summer storm chasing here in the States. Only downside is...if the passenger side airbag ever goes off, that D60 is getting ejected straight THROUGH the windshield....
hands up! i probably should have been arrested at least 5 times by now! I leave my camera in the boot now but still can't resist the looking behind my shoulder at a missed opportunity!!
Yes! I am constantly spotting great potential pictures! I’ve been lucky enough to not get into trouble. When I am a passenger all I do is stare out the window and snap pictures with my camera lol. It is so funny that you brought this up because I have been seeing things in a very artsy way since joining 365 Project. Be safe everyone!
Right there with you al! I am constanty on a search for new photo spots for my sessions, or something fun to shoot. I pulled over the other day to take a picture of a Rock Quarry that I have lived near for thirty one years and never given a second glance before!
Amused at all the "but shh don't tell my husband!" as if the only consequence is getting a telling off. How about "but shh hope I don't murder any innocent people!" instead?
> HA HA HA!!! YES! I was on the highway and nearly swerved into an oil truck trying to get a sunset picture with these trees. @lauraann01
Maybe it's me but that doesn't come across all that funny. Would it be funny if I was the guy you nearly swerved in to, took a dislike to being nearly killed, forced you to pull over, and expressed my anger through force? Would that still be funny?
Let's not get it twisted here - I'm not a fan of stupid "rules for the sake of rules" and do maintain that if you can't use a phone safely whilst driving you shouldn't be driving in the first place - but taking a photo? Something which is time-critical, thus pressuring you to devote more attention to it, and requires more of your attention for an extended time anyway, just to line a shot up... isn't that just asking for trouble?
Anything that takes attention away from the road is potential tragedy. Really, the photo would NOT be worth it if someone was hurt while trying to snap a quick one.
Another word of caution - this is something I'm guilty of. When you pull over to safely take a photo, don't get so wrapped up in your subject that you forget to watch out for yourself. Pull over SAFELY and remember to look.
I have now stepped off of my soapbox and have put it away :-)
@eyebrows Phew, thanks for saying what I was thinking! As for Yeah that's me LOL, would it still be LOL if it was a kid you took out while distracted?
When driving safety first photo second. You only get one life use it wisely, I wanted to stop for a photo a couple of weeks ago, shame it was a busy road with traffic moving fast in both directions, I'll go back when it's quiet to get my shot after all i have all year.
Sorry rant over, I have a thing about bad driving ;-)

Can I join in the squeezes though please?
