Has anyone else here taken pictures of this subject; about the things you really fear, or to create an awareness of your phobia? I did that today, my today's picture is about emetophobia, a phobia that's actually very common, but barely known to most people. I posted some info along with the picture:
Anyone else here who's affected by this? Or by any other form of phobia? And did you try to capture the essence of your phobia/fear in a picture?
There was a member last year who was doing phobias as a photo topic for a while. Unfortunately, they do not appear to be participating any longer. Here was their profile: http://365project.org/adysmiles/365/2010-11-28#
I never knew there was such a thing as emetophobia! I can't stand to get sick, and usually hyperventilate when I do because I hate it so much. I plug my ears when my kids get sick. I'm pretty sure it is a phobia for me. Whenever my kids get the stomach flu I get really anxious and scared that I'll get it too. I haven't taken any pictures of that though. Good shot!
@mej2011 : Yes, I saw his pictures when I hit the phobia tag button today, very impressive job! :-) @clarissajohal : Only butterflies, or other insects as well? @lislee75 : What you describe sounds very much like emetophobia...
@shadowdancer Just butterflies. Something about the spastic way they fly that I find unnerving. My family finds it amusing because I've worked around lions and tigers (I used to work at a zoo) and they never bothered me a bit.
@clarissajohal : Guess the way they fly remind you of something you dislike or fear... I don't mind them as long as they don't don't touch me while flying, but the same goes for moths, or birds as well. It's not that I actually fear that, but I don't like the feeling of the fluttering wings. You worked with lions and tigers? That is so cool!! :-)
@jesase : Really? Do you fear the germs inside? I'm sorry my picture was misleading, but I couldn't think of any other way to "portrait" emetophia. After all, I didn't want to post a picture of the actual subject of this fear which would be way too disgusting! ;-)
@shadowdancer - Yep, I have HUGE bathroom germ phobias - worse in my own bathrooms at home, and at others' homes, than out in public! I don't have emetophobia, but I do tend to vomit in sympathy if I see/hear someone else do it.... ewwwww! ; )
@clarissajohal : That sounds like a great job, I would LOVE to do something like that! :-)
@jesase : I can relate to the germ phobia when it comes to stomach bugs. During the winter season, when all these vomiting viruses are going around, I even fear to touch shopping cards, or the door handles of public buildings, especially doctor's offices or hospitals.
I steer with my elbows or wear gloves in the store when I push carts or try not to use them. I try not to touch door handles or use a tissue. I'm probably have a germ phobia too. I got a rotovirus from a work cafeteria salad bar and have not been back in the cafeteria since. I got it bad.
@mej2011 I remember those - they're absurdly intense. I wanna see more!
As for me, probably this:
I'm SO afraid of looking down and seeing water - so bridges, piers and even drains are all out of the question. I went to the very end of the pier and I really wanted to cry on the way back... so iffy :(
I have really bad emetophobia too, my hands are raw from washing my hands to often to avoid getting any stomach bugs =/ your shot's really good, i love the colours, and portraying what you fear the most is an interesting idea.
I don't like slugs - correction - I feel like throwng up when I see slugs. Somebody left a fav and follow on my site (don't remember who) and I ventured to their site to check them out to be puched in the face with the sight of 2 snails (in extreme close up) crawling over each other. The whole slime thing and texture of their bodies make me feel really ill!!! I promptly jumped to the thumbnails view and looked through their album sans snails!! I didn't hold it against them, I returned the follw - but I can't bring myself to look at photos or real life...!
Wow, I never thought of taking pictures of what I fear. I hate traffic jams but I'd have to get stuck in one to get a picture. Small spaces give me the willies, too. I'll have to think about this. My niece dislikes birds intensely but I love them.
My one and only is roaches. I can't even hear the word. For that matter can't even look at what I typed. I have nightmares if I see/hear, etc them. My kids think it is funny. NOT! So there would be no way in hell I could even take a photo of them.
@shemchin@refriedradio@sparkle : Personally I do not fear - or even dislike - any kind of animals, but I know that these phobias are very common. I had a co-worker who was absolutely terrified when there was a spider, I always had to remove them for her. And my sister finds slugs really disgusting. When she was a child, I had to carry her when slugs were on our path...
@lauriemct : Interesting! I do not fear them, but I always found them eerie. I definitely don't like clowns, that's for sure!
@indiannie_jones : I can relate to that, I think. Probably similar to fear of heigths...
@lislee75 : Sometimes I'm doing the same, especially in the winter. And I'm sorry to hear about the rota virus, sounds like a real nightmare!
@beelzeboss : I'm sorry to hear that! :-( I try not to wash my hands too often, but especially in the winter, it's hard!
@kchuk : Sometimes taking pics of it helps. I once cured my fear of wasps that way. The camera created a distance, so to speak, and when I looked at their pics, I could see their beauty. And the funny thing is, ever since I do not fear them, they won't attack me anymore like they used to do when I panicked.
i'm scared of heights, and clowns
and i can tell you why with the clowns...
have you ever seen poltergeist? there's a clown puppet in that that scared the bejezus out of me when i was younger, and we actually owned that clown...it was stored in the attic next to my bedroom
clowns creep me out
oh....and i have a thing about going down an escalator....it takes me a while to get on...and then i'm afraid it's going to stop while i'm on it....
@dkg : I saw that movie, but don't remember the clown, it's been awhile... But I remember the clown played by Tim Curry in that Stephen King movie, was that "It"? Absolutely disgusting!
Are people not scared of clowns because you cant see their real face and expression? I personally hate masks of any kind because of that - It really frightens me to know that I cant see the real person and maybe what they are really thinking?
The eyes are the window to the soul after all!
@louisejb : Yes, that could be. Now that you've mentioned it, it's coming to my mind that I don't like masks either. And clowns, well, they always look sort of evil to me due to their fake smile...
For me its flies, the bigger the worse I get! I have curbed my blind panic into inner turmoil since I had kids so as not to pass it on to them but I will not stay in a room with one or eat for a good long while after seeing one and will disinfect my house from top to bottom is one has come in. I won't ever ever photograph one that is for sure.
I actually quite like vomiting : O but yes thank you for the picture alluding to it rather than the alternative!
@araminta : You like vomiting?! Re. the flies: Don't you eat anything in the same room with a fly because you fear their eggs are in the food? I remember my grandma used to scare me with that thought...
@dkg AHHHHHHHH I'm SO glad I'm not the only one! I hate escalators!! Especially going down. It takes me a good minute or two to brace myself :/ which is awwwwkward in public but what to do?
Personally, I love clowns! :) I think I'm the only one though.
@shadowdancer I have gross tales of my sister and finding more than just eggs in her food. I like it as it gets rid of the feeling of needing to like itching a scratch!

I agree. As a psychology major I found them very interesting and I think the intensity of them really showed how intense the phobia could be.
