I'm doing three shoots for a client in the next three weeks and she had the novel idea of opening the question to her facebook group - she's a musician. The question being about where people would like to see her in photos for promo and profile stuff...
This weeks is a shoot for her blues stuff
Next up is the wedding and more pop scene singing
After that is the songwriting shoot
Then I have a website to build and such but basically I thought it would be a good idea to open up some suggestions to a photography orientated group as well...
Suggestions for style, setting etc.
It seems weird and though I have my own set of ideas I'm actually pretty keen to see how the suggestions turn out...
I was going to suggest where she writes her songs. Some shots of her just in her element writing/creating. I love seeing those type of shots of my fave artists.
@lolanae That's a really good one, I'm glad it's the last shoot - she's relatively comfortable with me as a photographer already but songwriting is a bit more nervous because it's more emotionally involved for her in terms of performance and actually writing.
@lolanae First one's tomorrow - I'll have one of them as my photo for the day or fridays... Also just got a shoot confirmed for Sunday so getting to be a busy week as there's Saturday too...
You could do the blues stuff real gritty, like ISO 3200 B&W type. I know that is somewhat beginner level type stuff but it is the style I think of when I think of blues singers and musicians. Is there a small club somewhere that you could use a small stage to make it seem real underground, undiscovered type setting? It seems like the blues originated in that venue... my 2 cents, spend it or save it!
@shadesofgrey That stuff's the reason I love ISO expansion, it's like overdrive for noise and produces better grit...
Yeah got a host of old industrial places planned along with some building sites and then off to some bluesy venues - I'd rather do rough bluesy bar than the semi tradition of country roads etc.
I have been doing some gritty B&W for other people lately too - blues related again, they love the moodier gritty shots...
I can see a standing on the bar with -insert instrument, mic stand, various musical related prop- shot from the waist down type of shot since you mentioned a bar scene. I know you are supposed to show the face since that is how fans know who the artist is, but if you coupled it with a full shot or something showing the same setting/clothes I'm sure the viewer would put two and two together.
@shadesofgrey I'll need to do face shots too for promo stuff, maybe something similar to this but different setting and more room to the left of the scene...
@killerjackalope well I am just an amateur (sp?) so I can't really be of much help, just saw a photo in my head.. that being said, I was thinking more along the lines of the website you were talking about as far as putting pictures near/by/in the area of each other...maybe it will work, maybe not, just thought I would offer it up.
Getting tunnel vision is a bad thing so I think it is really cool that you as a professional put it out there for us to think on and offer ideas, very classy.
@shadesofgrey Well I've just went from part time professional stuff to full time and diversified a bit with what I shoot as well...
I like the idea you had there, that's not her or anything, but to get in the prop face combo that was the closest sort of shot I had to hand...
I would love for some professionals to pop up and share a little about the business side of it - I've no problem with most business stuff but a little guidance and anecdotes never hurts for getting going. I intended to slowly build my business until it could be my living and now I've had to jump in at the deep end for now...
