iphoto question

March 17th, 2011
hi....i have a question about iphoto
i have a mac that i used during my 2010 attempt at this project (due to my pc being stolen)....i used iphoto for most of the pictures....
for christmas i got a new pc, and i just copied all the pictures off of the mac onto an external harddrive...when i try to view them on my pic, it's telling me image not available...
the only info i can find when i google, says i should have copied them a certain way....but is there something i can do to convert the files i've already copied without having to re-copy them?

thanks

Is the PC able to read other files ( i.e. not photos ) on the external drive ?
If not, the problem could be the way the drive is formatted.

What I don't understand is why anyone would go back to a PC after using a mac !!

@Joseph, I hear you! Mac is soooooo photo user friendly! I use iphoto & Aperture.
@ Danielle, did you save them separately as JPEGS or did you copy the whole iphoto program? Pull your photos out of iphoto onto into a separate folder on your desktop. Then download to the external. It might be saying no image available because it is still recognized as an iphoto photo. May need a photo software program on your external.

The PC can't read your iPhoto library - but I can read the individual JPEGs easily enough... Which program are you trying to use, to open the photos on the PC?

Also, as @jdonnelly said, check the formatting on the disk - there can be issues with PCs reading Mac-formatted storage, and so on...

But seriously, you're moving from Mac to PC? Are you getting rid of your opposable thumbs next, eh?! :P

I can't help you with the question, so hopefully those above do but I have to agree - I love my Mac!!!!! All my photos are in iphoto

thanks for the replies everyone!

@jdonnelly i only have photos on my mac that i copied onto the external hard drive...i only used the mac for photos, and i only used it for photos because it was the only computer i had access to....and it's partly the reason why i stopped my 2010 365 project

@lauriemct i saved them as jpegs...i copied over the folders from the mac that had the pictures....roll 4, roll 5 etc.....so are you saying i'll have to copy them off the mac again but in a different way? or is there a way to change the file so that my pc will recognize it?

@manek43509 i'm using just the regular photo viewer...i opened the folder on the external hard drive, and clicked on the picture, and it's showing up image not available....when i open it up through picasa it says invalid image

i can view all the other pictures that i copied off the hard drive no problem, it's just the ones i copied over from the iphoto folder

i knew i'd get some guff saying how i'm using the pc not the mac anymore...the only reason i even had a mac was because my husband's friend was nice enough to give me the mac after my car was broken into and my laptop was stolen...we couldn't afford to buy a new one, and he gave me the mac....i'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, so i made do with the mac....i've always been a pc girl, and found the mac to be pretty frustrating...i used it for 6 months and i eventually got used to it, but, it wouldn't recognize my camera when i plugged it in with the usb cable, so i had to buy an external card reader, which couldn't be plugged in the same time as my hard drive bc the usb ports were too close, and i needed the external bc i was running out of memory....i found it so frustrating to use, that i just didn't want to deal with it and i just lost interest in trying to upload pics and continue with my project.....
i mainly used picasa to edit the photos anyway, i don't use any of the other editing software...i hardly even used iphoto
i'm much happier with my pc...there were too many times i wanted to toss my mac out the window
but, to each their own.....everybody has their preferences.....sorry for the tangent...

is the bottom line that i'll have to get back on the mac and copy the pictures a different way onto my external hard drive?

thanks!

You may have to open iPhoto. Go to the photo view, where you can see all the thumbnails of your images. Hit Ctrl+a to select all, then go file menu and select export. Then you can select to export them as jpg. That might help if just copying the files does not.
