Facebook

Who adds their pictures to facebook, be it your own site or on your own profile?

Up until now I have but I'm seriously considering taking them all off due ti the fact that facebook can just take your pictures and use them for themselves and it's completely legal. I don't think my photos are good enough to be used at all but it is my own work and wouldn't want to think of anything being taken to be used for someone elses gain. I don't mind photos of my family etc as I set those for certain people to see and can't even see fb wanting to use any of them anyway but when I take photos of objects, I don't know what goes through others minds to want to use those photos.

What are your thoughts?

I post all my pictures onto FB as well. Only my friends can see my album though. I'm not sure where legally FB would stand if they tried to use one of your photos, after all, you own the copyright as you took it?
March 23rd, 2011
From their t&c's
"You own all of the content and information you post on Facebook, and you can control how it is shared through your privacy and application settings."
March 23rd, 2011
@kirsty1975 I upload my random pictures with friends and family without a second thought. (Under friend lock, of course)
But, when uploading anything I consider more on the photography side, I always watermark. It seems the easiest way. I'm not sure if you're any safer with facebook using them, but it makes me feel like I am.
March 23rd, 2011
TBH, I wouldn't trust facebook, I put all my extra images onto flickr rather than my facebook page.
March 23rd, 2011
I post to FB, and I use the 365porject application to post there as well.
March 23rd, 2011
I post a few of mine to FB and I'd hate to have any 'stolen'. All the rest go on Flickr.

My nephew's wife took down all her photos of their baby as someone stole one of her photo's and used it commercially!

I have just done an internet security class in my girls school and the tutors say once you add your photos to FB then they are fbs property to do with as they wish. They can still see them even if you have them secured as I have mine secured too, (except for my 365 ones I suppose) so copyrighted or not FB can still legally use them
March 23rd, 2011
I stopped putting photos up on facebook awhile ago, when they changed the uploading, even just random shots.

@kirsty1975 @minxymissk straight from FB website:

Privacy

Your privacy is very important to us. We designed our Privacy Policy to make important disclosures about how you can use Facebook to share with others and how we collect and can use your content and information. We encourage you to read the Privacy Policy, and to use it to help make informed decisions.

Sharing Your Content and Information

You own all of the content and information you post on Facebook, and you can control how it is shared through your privacy and application settings. In addition:

1. For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos ("IP content"), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook ("IP License"). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.

2. When you delete IP content, it is deleted in a manner similar to emptying the recycle bin on a computer. However, you understand that removed content may persist in backup copies for a reasonable period of time (but will not be available to others).

3. When you use an application, your content and information is shared with the application. We require applications to respect your privacy, and your agreement with that application will control how the application can use, store, and transfer that content and information. (To learn more about Platform, read our Privacy Policy and Platform Page.)

4. When you publish content or information using the "everyone" setting, it means that you are allowing everyone, including people off of Facebook, to access and use that information, and to associate it with you (i.e., your name and profile picture).

5. We always appreciate your feedback or other suggestions about Facebook, but you understand that we may use them without any obligation to compensate you for them (just as you have no obligation to offer them).

FROM WHAT @shadesofgrey has copied over i read that to be that they can only use them if you make them public (ie veiwable to anyone) ....its just how i see it.

and the ones of mine that are veiwable to anyone are of no use to anyone as they are heavily watermarked :)
March 23rd, 2011
@shadesofgrey subject to your privacy and applications settings.....so, my privacy settings are that only my friends can see my photos. So they cannot use them publicly, as they are still subject to my privacy settings, regardless of the permissions that have taken for themselves.
March 23rd, 2011
I post my pictures on FB for family to see. I also post them on Shutterfly as you know. I make sure my privacy settings are such that they can not be used by FB. I received this notice about FB.

FACEBOOK'S BEING SNEAKY AGAIN ~ On Friday, Facebook will start using your photos in ads that will appear on the profile page of your contacts. It's legal and is mentioned in the fine print when you create your account. TO stop this do the following: Account, Account Settings, Then click on Facebook Ads, choose "No one" on the drop-down menu and save changes. Copy this and use in a status update. PASS ALONG
March 23rd, 2011
@minxymissk thats exactly how i read it too :)
March 23rd, 2011
No-one else can steal them though.... http://www.facebook.com/legal/copyright.php?howto_report

There was a case recently where a man tried to sue the New Zealand Herald for using a photo from his facebook page. Judge ruled against him as he said that the photograph was 'in the public domain' - veeeerrrryyyy interesting....
March 23rd, 2011
@cirasj Thank you so much for this. I have done it at once. i often wondered about the photos I put on and always held back the nice ones.
March 23rd, 2011
I post all my photos on FB too.
@cirasj - if you go into FB and read what it says they will only be using your profile picture, will only link your picture to pages you have publicly "liked" and it will only be seen by your friends.

This site is as close to "social networking" as I get and I was/am hesitant to identify myself by sight or name on here. I was extremely hesitant to take a picture of myself in uniform or otherwise identify myself and my employment. There are a lot of classes we have to take every year warning us of the dangers of exposing too much info. I get paranoid when my wife mentions things on FB about some things (usually personal) because it is truly too easy to get a small bit of info and exploit it. If someone were to look through my photo's they could probably deduce the town I live in and what I do for a living. I am no secret squirrel by any means but I am still wary of exposing too much of myself to others. There are websites out there that compile all sorts of publicly available information.
Here is one, I cannot remember the other that I have looke on, both had way way too much info. The other one even had a google map satellite picture of my house!

www.zabasearch.com
I found myself with an address from 6 years ago, plus others more recent. My wife comes back connected to my name, plus her maiden name. It is only for the US but I am sure there are some for the UK and other countries depending on your Freedom of Information laws.

*end rant entitled "why I don't like FB"*
March 23rd, 2011
I post my on FB through this site. Am I being obtuse? It would seem to me that they can just as easily be taken from this site.
March 23rd, 2011
I post to FB, but my profile is only viewable to friends. It seems this site is more public as anyone can browse through all photos.
March 23rd, 2011
OH boy....you just forced me to read their privacy terms. LOL. I have been avoiding it at all cost because I honestly didn't want to know the truth. I have been going back and forth for about a year now..with everything on the internet, period. After I googled myself and saw all my comments to public forums and other things posted all over the place I kinda freaked. Oh and also, to prove another point, google your name and then click photos. All of your profile pics from FB will show up...I have deleted my pics on several occasions, wished that I hadn't, posted again, deleted again.....about to delete again. Besides those stupid games like Cityville of FB, I'm not on there much anymore, FINALLY, after having my life miserably consumed by it for several years......but wait.....365 has taken its place ;) Now on to deleting my pics..hehe.
March 23rd, 2011
@flamez @minxymissk I just though everyone should be aware, I don't know how the privacy settings actually effect different parts of your page when others view it, sorry if I spoke out of turn!
March 23rd, 2011
TBH Photos is my main reason for using Facebook, I store them all there, I have them set to Friends only though.
March 23rd, 2011
@shadesofgrey I have to keep my privacy quite high on FB, in my mind, my photos on here are more vulnerable than those on FB.
You didn't speak out of turn at all - we should all be aware of the T&C's wherever we are posting our photos.
March 23rd, 2011
@shadesofgrey

Thanks for that. What I'm gathering then is as long as your privacy settings are used then you're safe. I have my personal pictures secured s oonly family and close friends can see them but all my other photo albums are set to "friends only" inc 365 project albums. I also group my friends on fb as to how I know them like any of yourselves who wanted to add me I would put you in a photography folder so you can see my 365 project and other photos which I don't mind you looking at too..

@cirasj I got that message from my cousin the other day and changed the settings so my photos couldn't be used.

The way it was put to me by the class teacher was that no matter the setting any photo is the property of facebook to be used as they're will but what it's saying in the privacy settings is depending on your security settings which to me puts my mind at rest and this is why I haven't bothered until now about my photos as I thought they were secure enough as outsiders can't see them.

@shadesofgrey can understand why you don't like fb
March 23rd, 2011
Thanks for all your replies
March 23rd, 2011
@lisjam1 I totally agree actually. Forgot about that, thanks for reminding me. That was one reason why I put them on fb in the first place since I was adding them here anyway. Ok, can't complain now, lol
March 23rd, 2011
I post my photos to facebook, but I don't upload them to facebook directly. It has nothing to do with privacy and everything to do with how horrible it makes your photos look. The compression/resampling is just awful. So instead, I just post a flickr link to my photo on facebook. It still adds a little thumbnail on your profile and when people click it just takes them to the full size flickr page.
March 23rd, 2011
another one as @shadesofgrey was saying, spokeo.com has some crazy personal info.
March 23rd, 2011
Oh great and I just messed up my 365 privacy but mentioning my name in a photos description and its now in google under my name.....how do I fix that? Its a catch 22 I feel. Be known and risk being harmed even more then the average chance.
March 23rd, 2011
@kirsty1975 Thank you Kirsty for starting this discussion.
March 23rd, 2011
@marubozo Thanks for the tip
March 23rd, 2011
All my photos on facebook are set as friends only to view, I've just tried googling myself with both my current name, maiden name and even my user name here and none of my images appeared.
I don't trust facebook completely but I'm not going to worry unduly.
March 23rd, 2011
I have a business and personal site on facebook and post on both.. though I don't do high resolution anymore after having images stolen. I always watermark my work for internet as well
March 23rd, 2011
@shadesofgrey some of the information is from public records that have little to do with the internet. Something as simple as a phone book can give information about you. As for the internet, whatever you/someone else posts is forever going to be known and public. It's extremely hard to keep a secret these days and even more trying to remove it from public sight. There's always going to be information out there. I am with you on keeping stuff offline if you can.

@kirsty1975 As for photos, what is the reason you take them? To share them? To sell them? For entertainment. You can't stop people from stealing the photos, and maybe there's some form of flattery of a company using your images. Keeping photos private only benefits you. Share them!

And removing them now is not going to help. Other companies may have already grabbed them and won't necessarily discard them from their storage when you do. You have little control over what you post once it's out there. Your control stopped when you pressed publish. ;-(
March 24th, 2011
@arrayofblues That was the one I couldn't remember! I could not believe how it connected me to my wife, my parents, almost every address I have had in the past 10 years AND the picture of my house linked to my name!
On the bottom of the spokeo page there is a privacy hyperlink. If you pull up your name and then copy the url, click on privacy and follow the instructions you can get that listing removed. Tell all your friends and family! It is only one site but it is one less that is out there if you don't want it to be.

@jeancarl Just by owning a home, paying taxes and participating in the census we give up info that is public record, I am ok with that, in part, because some of it is necessary to ensure that society operates smoothly ( people skipping out on taxes, saying they own property when they don't, etc) It would take a person going to every seperate office to get enough info to do anything with. BUT with the internet and everything that comes with it, suddenly all of that info along with everything that is put out there by friends, family, spouses is able to be compiled...but where does it stop? When do we become Big Brother and end up in a Farenheit 451 world? The best we can do is limit the info we voluntarily put out there and mitigate any that is in-directly provided as "public". I totally agree with everything you said and I just wanted to add to it.
