popular page

i look at page quite regularly and just wondered why there are some photos from a few weeks ago re-appearing - is this fair to everyone? surely the spaces are limited and precious.
like other people, i see some really great shots on here (on the latest page etc) isn't it more fair to give those people a slot rather than repeat photos.

(just curious, not having a go at Ross)

I had not noticed that images were repeated. I thought they were all pretty recent. @kmrtn6

i agree...it must be hard to pick because the talent here is phenomenal! maybe put some new names on there to bring their work/efforts forward....i am not sure how it is decided, but i will admit that whatever shows up there is pretty beautiful:)

If you're talking about the popular page surely it's just what people are currently viewing, more than likely it would be programmed and therefore Ross would have no say in what appears on there.

@kmrtn6 no one actually picks the photos that appear on the popular page. Those choices are generated by a complex program that takes a number of factors into consideration (exactly what is a secret).

@rebcastillo77 I know the formula... Ross told me on the 365 meet-up.. But if I told you, I'd have to kill you... lol

@andycoleborn I don't mind you killing me... so ok tell me now. LOL

@bugik If your sure.. it's like this... it's the magic monkeys... Ok, flight booked and I'm coming to get you haha
March 24th, 2011
@andycoleborn LOL well at least now I know- and since you technically to @bugik, you don't have to kill me as well :D

@rebcastillo77 you can sleep easy tonight :-)

I know one thing for sure. If your picture is of a dog, a cat or a squirrel, the monkeys are more likely to select it. ;)

@lisjam1 I think this could be true...I've had 2 cat photos on the PP, something to think about-lol!

@rogerprice @rebcastillo77 @andycoleborn I agree with it being an automated program taking in factors like # of views, comments & fav's...
I think the ones that you may be seeing that are 'old' photos, may have been part of the PP when they were first uploaded to 365 (due to original popular interest) & then maybe that person has later added it to a conversation thread, or won a theme/comp with it & so therefore there is a whole new wave of people viewing, commenting, fav'ing etc...
if you are trying to get into the PP, there is no gaurantee, but maybe think about the shot you are taking, yes there are some subjects that are automatic crowd pleaser... Participate, Participate, Participate! Join in on the "browse & picks" "black & whites" "themes" "object challenges" & the list goes on... the more you put your photos out there, the more they are likely to be viewed etc...

@lisjam1 so true!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 24th, 2011
I do most of my viewing on the latest page and only visit the pp when someone tells me that I actually made it there (not often since I don't have access to dogs, cats, or squirrels). ;o)
March 24th, 2011
I've never actually made it onto the PP, at least not that I am aware of. But a friend of mine has had a few photos on it. I have no idea how they are all selected.

Hmmm, I don’t think I’ve seen old pictures re-appearing, as you’ve said. If that’s the case, it must be a glitch, because generally the images are from the last two days (on the calendar; the image itself could’ve been taken years ago) – and assuming being there gets them more attention, then the longer they’ll stay there. Heaps of views doesn’t make an image “popular” – heaps of comments (and favs) do, particularly if there as many comments as there are views (or close).

It happens that some images have made it directly to homepage within an hour of being uploaded, only because there are ten views and twelve comments or something (commenting from the dashboard doesn’t increase views).

Just an educated guess ;)

It would not be helpful to know exactly how they are chosen because, just as we have seen in TV talent shows, it would enable cohorts of participants to engage in 'tactical voting' to help their friends achieve stardom, and that would spoil everyone's enjoyment. We can't all be instant celebrities but it is very rewarding to see one's work appear occasionally and unexpectedly on that page, so let the nuts and bolts of the algorithm remain a secret and not try to beat the system!
