Cameras for Concerts

March 29th, 2011
I'm looking for a good camera to take to a concert. Preferably small, obviously I can't take a huge camera in, or an SLR. I just wondered what everyone here uses..

@lissuhllama I like my little powershot

just make sure you don't have pocket fuzz all over your lens ;)

I would take a good pair of shoes and watch the concert and dance all night... if I had to pick a camera to take... those new nikon P&S night mode is crazy... or a Lecia D-lux 2 for a super zoom... or a Pentax KX with a DA 70... it is a dslr that fits in your jacket pocket with the compact pancake lens...

or one of those newer EVIL cameras like the pen... but the lens is still rather large...

so many choices.. hence why I would just go dance...

Shooting gigs is extremely difficult from both sides, I find...

This is taken on my iPhone, from the audience, when I went to see one of my favourite bands ever, The Hold Steady -

This was taken on my Nikon, at the same venue, but from on the stage, during a gig I did there with Cardiem -

Unfortunately, lighting engineers will not have you in mind, when they set up a light show for the set... ;)

However, my friend Mark takes some excellent gig photos... Here is one he took of my band, Witchers - still at the same venue as the other two pictures, above...

I know that he uses a Canon dSLR - I believe it is an EOS 50D... You can look at Mark's website here, if you like...

Thanks for the thoughts! :) I do have a Nikon Powershot and a Kodak Easyshare. Hope my seats are as close as I think they are!

I got some really nice results from a Canon Powershot SX120is at a Simple Minds concert at Wembley Arena, even fully zoomed. I think anything with a manual setting will increase your chances of getting a good shot but unless you are a natural, be prepared to shoot a lot to get a few decent ones, as the lighting, as previously mentioned, makes things very interesting!
