What Does It Take?

March 29th, 2011
Hi everyone. So, I know that there are quite a few of proffesional photographers on here. What I would like to know is what does it take to become a proffesional photographer? You see, I am a freshmen in high school, & I think I want to work as a proffesional photographer, once I graduate. Also, if you have the time, please look at my project so far and critique what I have up. I really want to be a photographer, but I am worried that I am not good enough. Please & Thank you.

Hi Hannah,
I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imagination. I looked through your album and you have some very beautiful shots. However, they're mostly of flowers. You need to branch out and take pictures of other things.

I love taking pictures of flowers. I live in an area where flowers are blooming all the time and I could probably take a flower picture every day. But, with the encouragement of my daughter (she forbade me from taking pictures of flowers for the month of March) I've branched out into other areas. Next month, she's considering banning birds from my portfolio.

Stretch yourself. Find other things. Textures. People. Animals. B&W. There's all sorts of things you haven't even explored yet.

Think about composition - yours could improve somewhat. Read about it, understand the rule of thirds, and as @webfoot suggests take some photos of something other than flowers! However, this shot is pretty awesome:

professionaly, well a lot of time practice patience and commitment an eye for detail a fairly unique style helps too as there are countless photographers out there who will be after the same job as you, some post processing experience and a lot of drudgery (because being professional means you will probably have to take the shots that are required rather than having free reign over what shots you take. and often assignments can be dull as ditch water) and if you are thinking of becoming freelance you will need a business head as you will effectively be running your own business so everything that that involves also including book keeping. also be aware unless you are well known enough or have a style that everyone wants that you are unlikely to become rich from it, but if you are passionate enough not to worry about such things and are dedicated enough to put up with all the paperwork and tedium then go for it :D
