a top, well-known photographer to learn from

March 30th, 2011
Wouldn't it be great to create a 365 list of top, well known photographers and what we can go learn from them? And for those new to photography who don't know any this will create a resource for them and all of us to draw on to improve our photography.

So, just tell us who your absolute favourite top, well known photographer is. Describe why that is and what we can most learn from that photographer. Add a link to your favourite shot of theirs and say why you like it.

I have always loved HENRI CARTIER BRESSON.

I think he can teach you most about composition through the "geometry" of his pictures without seeming staged. You could also learn a lot about light, mood and character from him. He also captures special moments with great honesty, joi de vivre and character. He is BIG on soul, which is why I love his stuff.

I would like to have a more technical grasp of photography to say more clearly as to why I like his work so much but this will have to do. I would love you to show off your technical knowledge in ways that will help those less technical learn.

My favourite (tough to have just one) is the Women Praying in Kashmir, which is second from the bottom of this collection: http://theorganbetweenmyears.blogspot.com/2010/08/geometric-composition-im-old.html, which gives you the opportunity of seeing some other stunning shots by him.

It's funny, the commentary in this link with this picture says exactly why that one most appeals to me - it is the timelessness and a sense of 'God'. It is the way in which each woman is doing something different, it is the elegant outstretched hands that could be that of a ballet dancer. It is also the light and the mountains, almost suggesting the women are communing with the forces of creation. It's a very spiritual picture.

There are others, for sure but this one stood out to me years ago and still does.

He is a relative new comer but captures phenomenal photos and has contracts with big companies as a result. On his blog he often explains his shoots or writes diaries explaining how the day went. Occasionally he has interviews and different things posted on his blog as well.

My favourites fall into two groups - those that are worth learning from and those that I couldn't possibly emulate in a million years (the Annie Leibovitz school of the fantastic).

Here's just one to start with, he's Sam Javanrouh, born in Iran but now Canadian living with his wife and child in Toronto. His shots are mainly 'takes' on his home area and (I think) he comes up with some excellent shots day after day.

I've got too many landscape heros and heroines so I'll hve to do a little filtering.

@ellida Thanks so much for pointing Sam out. He's taking pictures of the places I'm passing by each day. I've bookmarked his site.

I love Andrew Collett - http://www.andrewcollett.com/gallerylanding.php
a local photographer who does amazing Canadian landscapes. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to take one of his workshops this Fall season. :)
