Im assuming thats the Canon 500D????

I'd recommend reading the manual, learn all the different settings, and what they all do!!! Sometimes it wont shoot if you are too close to an object and it cant focus...

I assume you're using the kit lens? There shouldn't be any problem with the shutter - what do you mean when you say it won't go off? Have you focused prior to attempting to get the shot?

I second @triptych_angel of being too close or far away. It will try focusing but won't find the right setting, preventing you from taking a shot. Switch to manual focus.

I got my first dslr in January - the EOS Rebel T2i (EOS 550D). I didn't even want to play with it until I'd sat down and gone through the manual thoroughly. I did everything on autofocus for about 2 weeks, then started to experiment. I use the viewfinder almost always. When you press the shutter halfway while looking in the viewfinder watch for blinking settings - means your lighting is not right.

I recommend a good instruction book as well. I like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Betterphoto-Guide-Digital-Photography-Amphoto/dp/0817435522

Understanding the basics of exposure is the most important lesson.

I think if your'e too close to the subject then switching to manual's not going to help at all.. it just cant focus that close. Step back, half depress the shutter to focus, recompose and then fully depress to shoot.

Reading manuals? i've actually never done that lol

i have a T1i and love it(although i am hoping for a 5d mark 2 in the near future:))
i have to agree that with the shutter, you need to be focused or it will not take the pic...also, you will notice a red blinking light on the right in your viewfinder that warns you that the focus/settings are off. read the manual and just get out there and play play play...try some of the semi auto settings for awhile and before you know it you will be shooting in manual:) good luck!!!

DPS is a great website for learning photography(www.digitalphotographyschool.com)

I have one as well, and sometime it doesn't go off if I am too close (I think the distance is supposed to be 1.5m if you are not using macro) or if my lighting doesn't work and I am in one of the auto modes. Other than that, I love it :D My photos are so much better (I know a photographer shouldn't blame his tools, but I'm still learning :) )

I went from a powershot to the T1i as well! Maybe your camera is on automatic focus and sometimes it won't take the picture if the settings or light conditions aren't right...So try shooting the manual way. Also check out tutorial video's on youtube. They can be really helpful to learn what each function on your camera does! :)

I have the T1i & being "too" close is usually the problem. Occasioally I'll back up & it still won't work. So, I turn the camerra off & then turn it back on, then it works. Not sure why, it just doesn't like something I'm doing. As for the manual....I still haven't read it & I got the camera in October.

@toast @molizard So, for the people who didn't bother to read the manual, how could you figure out all the settings the FIRST time you ever used a dslr? Do you actually know every possible thing you can do on your camera? How could someone possibly go from a simple point and shoot to knowing what to do with manual settings w/o reading the manual?

@annielf wow its been a while since i've been on here. I guess I first went from point and shoot - the big button is the click. Then applying the idea of focus then recompose.

From there i read things which more have to do with understanding photography - like "Understanding Exposure". My point with my camera as with any tool is - is it intuitive enough to use from first principles? Luckily for the canon it was. I would then pick a setting in the camera and then test it out. I think i've actually looked up two things in the manual - auto bracketing and how to set off multiple flashes from the 7D body (although i havent tried this yet)

@toast I knew zero about exposure when I got my dslr. So I made sure I understood what was what before I started playing with manual. Didn't take long to begin to understand.

@annielf ah ok, yeah we all have our different ways of learning. I'm a typical engineer.. you know what they say "if in doubt, read the manual" which means the first part is just to pick it up and play :)

@toast Normally I hate reading manuals and won't go near them until I'm desperate. But with this camera I figured I'd better. Also read a book on exposure, macro/close-ups, and others. Feel like I've learned a LOT since I got this camera just over 3 months ago.
