Model/underage model release?

April 4th, 2011
So i know i need to get clients to sign a release to allow me to use their pictures in my portfolio or website... But what should it say? Are there any templates out there that I can look at to give me an idea?

What about for kids? A lot of the people I have sessions set up for are involving kids family photos and the like. Is there a special release for them since they are underage?

What else might I need?

Hi Angela,
I asked about model release forms a few weeks ago. I received a lot of helpful advice and was directed to this website which has a few standardised forms. http://asmp.org/tutorials/forms.html

Actually, you do not need a release if all you are doing is showing it online. Model releases are only if you intend to sell someone's photo to a third party, such as selling prints on your website, selling the photos to a magazine or newspaper, or selling them to an advertising agency.

You also only need a model release if you are photographing a single person in a portrait-style photo. And especially if the model is a child.

If someone has hired you to shoot portraits, you should have a contract they sign. There are three general areas addressed in a portrait contract: how much you get paid, the fact you still own the copyright of those photos, and that you are allowed to use their photo online and in print to promote yourself.

So, you don't need a specific model release if they have hired you to shoot portraits. And you are always free to use photos you take in a portfolio or website to promote yourself. Just think of street photography...you never get a model release for all of them.
