International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

April 4th, 2011
Today is the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
Twenty-one countries hosted special events to mark the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action on or around April 4, resulting in press coverage in 34 countries and drawing attention to the plight of survivors and the gradual reduction in new casualties since the anti-personnel mine-ban treaty entered into force in 1999.
In Colombia (where I am from) , illegal armed groups ( mainly guerrillas link to the drug trafficking), leave behind Anti-personnel mines and explosive in fields and around schools in rural places targeting not just military personal but also kids and civilians.
The Presidential Program for Integrated Mine Action reports a cumulative total of 7,515 victims (death of dismember) from 1990 to 2008, including 722 children (http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0019/001912/191228e.pdf). So the we (Colombians) are rolling up our pant legs to create awareness and to remember the people that miss any limb due to mines. Some people have take pictures with their pants roll up and downloaded in this webpage.
