I am fairly new to photography. I have the kit lens my T1i came with, and a 75-300mm. I want to buy a new lens at the end of this month and am curious what the 365 population uses the most.
I have the t2i and the kits lens is great my 55-250mm, but I also have the 50mm 1.4 so awesome for everyday type stuff, and 85mm 1.8 which is great for portraits. When buying a new lens think about what you will use it for, and what kind of pictures you want to take. Is it for everyday stuff, landscape photos, macro, portraits, etc... if its all of the above then consider one that can do the most for you, so you get more bang for you buck. Its your hard earned money and photography is not a cheap hobby! what I did was looked at all my photos that I tend to take, and I did research. Check out all the lenses and the photos they produce. Everyone seems to like the 50mm 1.8 but it wasn't for me but I didn't know until I tried it, so def go to your local camera store, don't just buy online. You want to feel, hold and test it out. I buy mine from my local wolf camera and they people are great and knowledgeable plus you can try it out. hope this helps!
I have 100mm f/2 that I LOVE
I have the 50mm f/1.8, its a great lens, but I don't find myself reaching for it very often. . I think it just doesn't work with what I am trying to shoot.
also have the kit lens 18-55 with a wide angle adaptor lens that seems to fill the gaps while I look for others.
OK guess I am no help at all (haha) look forward to seeing everyone elses responses.
my suggestion is to see if you can borrow/ try/ rent them before you buy.
@dvarey I really want one. Diana did you buy yours online or do you know of a good store here in town that I can go to? My local wolf really does not carry much.
I don't really have three that I use at the moment, but the two below get almost all of my workload. My other lenses just don't compare quality-wise so I avoid using them unless I have to. But I do plan on getting a 50mm f/1.4 here soon to round out the list.
@joshuaramey my suggestion is do your research on lenses and don't cheap out. Think about what's important to *you* Do you want to sacrifice price for speed? That's what I do each time and end up regretting it. ie I should have bought this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/680103-USA/Canon_2751B002_EF_70_200mm_f_2_8L_IS.html but ended up spending $2,200 less for the same zoom range, but with significant reduction in speed.
If simply having the lenses is more important at the moment, I'd say get a few prime lenses in your favorite to shoot focal length and make sure you've got the full range covered as well.
My favorite is a 50mm f1.2 though it's the cheaper version of canons 50mm and therefore slow to focus.
The lens I use the most is (sadly) the kit lens that my camera came with 16-80(?) 5.6
and can't wait for my next. Sorry to interrupt the question, but @jinximages I am torn between the 85 and the 70-200, may I ask what you shoot most with each? I do mostly portraits, but think I would love the 70-200??
@lrappa Hi Lisa. :) The 85 is my hands-down favourite lens, but it's not great when shooting kids, or anything that's moving really. The 70-200 gives beautiful subject isolation at the long end, but the main attraction is that zoom - if you have space, you can shoot small groups or headshots with equal ease. I tend to use the 70-200 a lot for weddings, and child photography. The 85 I tend to use for closeups of adults, and for outdoor portraiture where I have the space and the time to frame things just how I want to. The 85mm is so worth the trouble of using a prime, but it would be a tougher shoot for me without the 70-200. I use the 85 most of all my lenses but, if only using one camera, the 70-200 is the one I could least afford to lose.
@joshuaramey it was a gift from my husband and I do believe he bought it online after doing his research. have you checked any other photo stores in your area?
