Lens suggestions for Nikon D90

April 7th, 2011
I know this discussion has been up here before, but I wasn't able to find the info I wanted. I really, REALLY want a macro lens to do intense close-up shots. What suggestions do you have for a Nikon D90? I want a good lens and am willing to pay a little more for a quality lens.

Also, to tide me over until I can get a good macro lens, I bought a really inexpensive set of macro filters and a reverse lens mount for a 52 mm. I thought I had a 52 mm that would work with my camera (it's from an old Nikon 35 mm camera I've had for 30+ years) but do not like the way it works with my DSLR. Can you suggest a good 52 mm lens as well?

I currently have the kit lens (18-105mm) that came with my D90 and a 70-200mm telephoto. Are there any other lenses that you have that you just love and couldn't live without? I'm open to any and all suggestions!

Nod
I used to own Nikon system and the macro lens that I have (didn't sell it with the rest of the Nikon gear) is the Nikon 60 f2.8 Macro. Version 2 came out about a year ago I think. Great lens.

52mm filter size, or lens focal length? My Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 takes 52mm sized filters... got it for $79 used from B&H.

I use a Nikkor AF-S Micro 60mm f/2.8G for macro shots. Way sharp and easy to use. I think they run about the $500-600 range.

I don't really like non Nikkor brand lenses, just haven't had good quality luck with them, so all I can really recommend is Nikkor...

On the expensive side, you can consider Nikon 105mm f2.8 Micro VR, its a good and sharp lens, the cheaper version is Nikon 105mm f2.8 Micro ED is also as good as the VR version and more value for money. I'm using D90 and I have Nikon 105mm VR, Im quite happy with it except its a bit difficult to compose smaller subjects if the VR is enabled because once the VR kick in, the composition will slightly move so normally I disable the VR when shooting.

I also have Nikon 55mm Micro AF, its a rare lens but its the sharpest lens by Nikon according to the reviews. Its one of my favorite lens but only issue with it is its too short to capture flying insects, you have to go closer to the subject, and before you can get closer to then, they already flew away. But its good in shooting flowers or stationary subjects.

If you want to shot for flowers or stationary subject you can but the cheaper Nikon 55mm AF Micro or Nikon 60mm AF Micro. But if you are looking for a hardcore Macro lens you can buy the Nikon Micro 105mm ED.

Another option you can look into are extension tubes. Kenko Uniplus has circuits so the AF will still work when used together with 50mm or tele lens. Its cheaper than the Macro lens but can deliver sharp images.

I LOVE my Tamron SP 60mm F/2 Macro lens! Taking macros is so easy with it. I also use it for other things besides macro because it takes great DOF photos!!

I'm looking for a great lens that is best suited for outdoor portraits, got any ideas? I'd love one that takes photos like my Tamron, but sometimes it's just too close and I don't want to have to back up just to get a good shot. ha ha
