Computer won't recognise my camera?

April 12th, 2011
I tried to upload my picture from today but my computer won't recognise my camera?
Same camera and computer that I always use and nothing has changed (that I know of!). Its a canon 400d, and I'm running vista.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks!

try plugging into different USB ports on your computer, or use a card reader rather than uploading direct from the camera - it will be loads quicker too!

@sburbidge Thanks! Have tried every port I have! I've ordered a card reader but no pics for 365 til it arrives! :-(

Mine did this yesterday - hadn't got the USB lead plugged in all the way :)

I have had that problem with mine so I reran the software and it worked ok again. Sometimes it can be as simple as using the wrong USB. My camera is a fussy thing.

@eyebrows well - what can I say! nope not that either! I suspect its a problem with the camera :-(

Try formatting your card.

@buccigrossi will I lose all the pics on the card if I format it?
April 12th, 2011
do not re-format!

assuming you have a pc and windows -- what about going into the control panel and chosing camera and scanners which should then prompt the camera wizard and you can then add the camera from there.

@cfrantz Thanks! I'll give that a go tomorrow!

Mine does that every once in a while. Usually if I unplug it, restart, and then plug it back in once it's all done rebooting, it works again.

Check the USB cable, they go sometimes...

If there's an issue with the camera communicating with the computer for a random reason then go in to the menu on the camera, find communication and switch it to PTP, it's hella slow but it'll work.

There'll be two top folders, go to the top one for your photos, don't bother opening the folders inside DCIM, it's THAT slow... Copy them over the computer.

My 10D and W7 don't believe in each other apart from on PTP mode, for when I misplace the card reader, the same trick works with most unsupported cameras on seven and vista...

@buccigrossi @killerjackalope Still no joy. Have now got a card reader so am working around it that way. I think its the camera.
