Camera/memory card lag?

April 17th, 2011
Today I was taking pictures for a lovely family with several fast moving boys. I was snapping away but my camera kept saying 'busy' and then I turned it off and it took forever to record the last 7 images... I was shooting in RAW, but why would it take so long? Could it be something with the memory card? I changed cards and the second card didnt have the issue-are some cards faster/slower than others?

Was this with your Rebel T1i? What you are describing sounds like a slow card in this case.

But while we're on the subject of rapid shooting and getting the busy signal, you can also see this when exceeding your buffer in the camera. With the rebel line you have a maximum burst rate of a little more than 3 pictures per second. But this is not continuous because the camera's built in processor has to process these image and push them onto the memory card. So when you're shooting really fast like this that buffer gets filled up and you can't take another photo until room has been made.

When this happens you'll usually see that you're able to fire off 3 shots in a second or so, and then if you keep trying to take photos immediately after that you'll have to wait a second or two before the busy signal goes away.

So, always use a class 4+ memory card, and understand the limitations of the camera when you have to shoot continuously for an extended period of time and you can minimize this inconvenience.
