Tamron vs Canon L series

April 25th, 2011
I am looking to get a 24-70mm canon L series...the price is pretty hefty. I have recently started my own photography business, I am using a canon 50 1.4 now, and I am happy with it, but would like a wider angle.
I have read that the tamron is pretty comparable to the L series. I was wondering if anyone have chosen the tamron over the canon.
What do you think I should do?

Where did you read that? While Tamron makes some fine lenses at a decent price point there is little comparison to the Canon professional grade lenses. If anything the Tamron lenses are very comparable to the non-L mid-range canon lenses

Yup, no question Canon L lenses are better than Tamron, Tamron aren't even that good in comparison to other third-party lenses. If you're starting a photog business, you should know that lenses are an investment and it's worth spending the extra.

If you ever want to compare lenses in terms of image quality, this is a great site. Here's a comparison of the Canon 24-70L and Tamron 28-75mm. Move your mouse over the little arrow in the middle and it will flip back and forth between the two lenses. Wide open especially, the Tamron looks like you have vasoline covering the lens once you get away from the center and at wide apertures.

L series. Definitely L series. Tamron has some decent lenses for the price (I use a couple of them), but remember that you get what you pay for.

Same here. We've had a Tamron or two in the past, but ultimately ended up selling them and upgrading to the L lenses. A world of difference!
