Can you take off the lens and look at the 8 contact pins along the inside of where you put the lens? Are the pins all the same height? I think I've buggered mine and have one that is stuck 'down' but want to check it's not supposed to be like that!
On my 550D (which is the same lens fitment) three are raised on a bit of plastic, five are about 1mm further in, unraised. The only difference is between the two groups as a whole; no individual pin is lower than the other two or four in its group.
@eyebrows Thanks Steve - It's buggered then! There is an authorised Canon repair shop a couple of miles away, may well be sending the wife over there tomorrow!
