Do external viewers affect your statistics?

May 1st, 2011
I wondered...

Does the "Daily views on your account" statistic include wiews from non-signed in people visiting the site or is it only for people who visit your pages who are signed-in members?

Anyone got an idea?

good question...it would certainly explain the ratio of views to comments received...sorry I don't have an answer but I would like to know also.

@roth The ratio of views to comments is way higher here than most places, much more comments to views...

It's a question I'd be interested in too though, because I don't know, I never embed images off the site elsewhere but curious...

I think Yes! It will count the non-signed in viewers. Try to find your picture or any pictures from other without signing in and you will notice that your views has been counted or added immediately.

Hmm! Difficult. I would not be sure that it was my view that incremented the counter. Could be hundreds of viewers online that did that. Not really testable either.

It doesn't count a view if a person is not signed in on the project. I noticed that when I viewed from one source then back to my phone where I was currently signed in.

Surely. A view is a view is a view.

@indiannie_jones - on a computer what you see is only what the computer has been told to produce. If you tell it external viewers do not count it won't count 'em. So understanding the rule behind the count helps us to understand what the stats mean.

@netkonnexion Check the views on a picture. Log out or use another computer (not logged in either) and see if it goes up?

Are you picking up what I'm putting down?

On my computer unless I'm signed in I can view other pictures but can't leave a message..so I'll try to view and see if it counts nonetheless.

When I have posted a link to a picture on my 365 account to my twitter account, the number of views shoots up but it doesn't seem to have an impact on the popular page.

@allie912 - that really is interesting. It may be that the stats are reported in different ways to the way the system uses them. Thanks for that.

I'm not sure, but one of my photo's had only been seen by less than 20 people. A few days after posting it, another member let me know she had shared my pic on her web site and within less than 48 hours it had a view count of well over 400! And that one never hit the PP. So my only explanation would be that it was from others (non-365ers) clicking the link to view it.

Lots of views isn't a good thing :) lots of comments / favs are @selardore @allie912

@indiannie_jones - nice point. However, the more views you get the more people are on your page to make a comment.
May 2nd, 2011
@netkonnexion Of course, you just have to convince them to do so :)

@indiannie_jones ... lol well it wasn't a very interesting pic, I think it was viewed for the subject ; cloth nappies and the 365'er posted it on a cloth nappy website. The reason I think the 'view count' also counts non-365'ers is because it was my second pic and I only had about 10 followers, lol unless they all really really loved it and kept coming back for more ;-) hahaha!

Haha, no I mean that more views doesn't get it on pp unless they're accompanied by comments :) I don't see why views wouldn't go up regardless if it were a member or visitor.

If I were running this website I would like to know how many views were coming from the Internet and how many were coming internally.

The external viewers are an indication of how your traffic is flowing to the site. The more of them there are the more potential customers there are.

I would like to know how many internal views there are because this would give an indication of how healthy the current users consider the site to be. If internal figures drop off then you would need to start thinking about invigorating your users or to start a new idea off to get people rocking...

Potentially we could be looking at internal views so we know how many of the experienced viewers are commenting. Our stats could potentially show only external viewers (unlikely) so we would know how many people we attract from outside the community. Or we could see a consolidation of all viewers and not know if we are attracting any from outside.

Interesting.
