What is Editing?

May 5th, 2011
All of my project is SOOC. Today I can't decide between two pictures, to me they both are good photographs and a good reminder of my day. I'm considering putting both the photos together in a collage.

Now - would you consider this as an edited photo? The photos themselves would be totally unedited, the same as the rest of my project, they would just be collaged....

Opinions please?

Wouldn't consider that editing. Just a means to show two photos.

To me it would be two SOOC shots, wouldn't consider it editing as such.

You're an ace member, so you could post one phot in your main album and the other in a second if you're afraid putting the two together constitutes "editing."

I think if you call it a diptych instead of a collage, it definitely wouldn't be considered edited. It's a silly thing, but it's a way of clearly saying "these are two photos next to each other" instead of "this is one photo edited." Not that I would automatically call the collage edited, but it would take the question away for me.

Isn't it really up to you to decide that for yourself? I assume you're the one who made the SOOC rule for your project so do whatever you're comfortable with. Personally, I'd go with the collage and I'd feel fine about it without thinking I'd violated the spirit of my project. Then again, if you want to get technical the dictionary definition of "edit" includes this: "to prepare (a film, tape, etc) by rearrangement, selection, or rejection of previously filmed or taped material." So I'd guess rearranging the photos into a collage would qualify as editing. But I don't think anyone here would fault you for including a collage, if that's what you're worried about.

I'm with Axel and Judith, not edited per se but just a way to show two photos together.

@dejongdd I could do, but then I'd have to choose just one for the project :) Think that's why I'm in this tizzy today! And they do look good collaged (and the SOOC rule is purely mine) but I don't want to go against the spirit of what I was trying to achieve.

Putting two or more SOOC together the photos are still SOOC,the presentation is not. It is like putting a frame around the photo, you have NOT edited the photo, it is still SOOC

I pretty much see it as two photos side by side.. There is no editing. You have not changed the images in any respects, they are still originals, just next to each other :o)

Thank you all for commenting - it is just my rule, and as such I guess I can bend it as much as I like, but I don't really want to bend it if that makes sense? The SOOC rule was to make sure I worked on my composition etc rather than fixing it later, so I guess in that way a collage wouldn't matter.

I appreciate all the input, thank you.

The only real rule is to use your own photos as you see fit. If you want to put two photos together into one display than go for it. I know there have been discussions that any altering of any photo is a sin to some, but I find something such as cropping the person standing on the edge of my photo to be okay. You just have to decide how you will define SOOC and not worry about what any of us will think. Also there is nothing wrong with making minor changes and adjustments to how you do your 365 throughout the year. Can you imagine being so rigid in rules on anything else that really has no rules in the first place?

@minxymissk I wouldn't say it's definitely editing, but it could be. If the pictures are somehow more together than they are as standalone images, then it is a creative addition.
Then again if you are happy to add a watermark, I'd say that's more editing than say, cropping or putting two images together.
It is your rules though, so if you say you can add a watermark, crop or collage but otherwise it's SOOC, that's cool :)

But honestly, don't you sometimes get the urge to max out the saturation, tint like crazy, clone away the distractions, fake DOF, add noise layers and then vignette the poor image to within an inch of its life (or just use Hipstamatic)?

@ukcam In the end I put it in my Odds and Sods folder rather than the main 365, just felt a bit "cheaty" even if the images themselves were untouched.

As for editing...I'm not particularly good at it anyway, am an utter beginner at PSE (Thanks SO much for leaving the manual out, so helpful). So I tend to only do very basic edits, cropping, vignetting etc, I have no idea to how to do much else :) And Hipstamatic? Oh for an iPhone ;)
Anything edited gets put in the Odds and Sods folder!

Thanks for the follow as well!
