Much Respect for Professionals

May 8th, 2011
I just have to say that I have so much respect for those of you that take photographs professionally....especially one time events like weddings.
The pressure is unreal to get it right.
I am not a professional. I have been asked to take pictures for money and I don't feel like I am ready. I will take pictures at family events...but even then I get nervous! It is like I know what settings etc. I need for a good shot...but under pressure I can't do it! I also underestimated how hard it is to get everyone in the group involved and excited about pictures.

Anyway- I have a lot of respect for you all in a time when so many people think it is easy to be a professional photographer!

@icywarm @cohare
i read this with great interest as i have had some of the same feelings.
i even feel pressure to give perfect photos if i am doing them for free.
it is true that a person learns an awful lot by practice and practice.
have either of you ever been told it is not important or silly to take so many photos?
i am told that a lot of times and i always wonder why people think that what they do is good and important but someone else's "work" does not really matter.
i also have more and more respect for the real professionals as i try to learn more and more for myself. so much to learn in just the lighting. will i ever learn it?
thanks for the discussion.
and i sure do enjoy seeing your photos.

Yep, same here. As much as I love taking photos, you couldn't pay me $20k to do a wedding or some other big event. Not worth the stress, so kudos to those who don't mind doing it.

@glendq I am a bit of a mad scientist when it comes to photography... so I like building cameras, lighting systems and other 'projects'

I find it goes like this... you take a lot of photos... people ask why you take so many... there is no real response....

step two... strangers comment on how many photos you take... there is no real response...

step three people start commenting on how good your photos are...

step four people start paying you for those good photos...

step five (45 years later) you don't need to take so many photos... almost all of them look good...

ok I jest....

at pentacforums a members signature says...

amatures worry about equipment
pros worry about money
masters worry about light....

I agree, well said cohare, I often wander through a local Botanic Garden on the weekends taking photos of bugs and birds and flowers and I see the local professional photographers all show up with wedding groups or school formals and I think "that is one gig I do not want the stress of"...

I'm happy being an amateur, but I did sell my second photo recently and what a Buzz!!!

I loved reading this thread and have gone back and forth on the doing it professionally thing as well- I know I am not ready yet, and I don't know if the pressure is something I would want to deal with, but I know I love love taking photos:) I feel I need a way to express that love further than just within my family and circle of friends.. For now I will take " thousands" of pictures and read up and study what I can. @bobphoto- I understand the joy of someone paying for your work- that is a goal of mine too- congrats!
