A kind reminder

Just being mother hen for a moment..
Take a moment to back up all of your photos.. I have just copied all of mine onto my external Hard Drive, and realised that it has been a few weeks since doing so. I would hate to think of anyone losing their work due to a computer throwing a tantrum, so please, consider backing up your files..
Thats all :o) Enjoy your day :o)

Thanks for the reminder Michelle. I've been really bad about doing this.
May 8th, 2011
Thanks. I don't do it often enough either.

@michelleyoung That's a good reminder Michelle. I use SyncBack Free on my PC ( http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/) to copy any new shots to an external 2TB hard drive with a few clicks.

Microsoft's SyncToy is also another good (and free) alternate ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=c26efa36-98e0-4ee9-a7c5-98d0592d8c52)

Seconded. I lost 6 weeks worth (which isn't that many, as it goes, I was having a dry spell) last month, but... still haven't got a new, solid backup procedure in place. Derp.

@sprogz do either of those do incremental backups? Y'know, keep some record of the state of the backup archive and only copy over changes?
May 8th, 2011
@eyebrows Teddy Bear.. I do know some fellow Uni Students who dont have any hard ware to use for backing up, so they rountinely email themselves their assignments & notes etc and just keep an email folder for that as a back up.

Great reminder Michelle, and your latest water drop shots are crazy amazing!!!!

@petersonsheri Awww Sheri, thank you so much :o)

I'm actually working on this today. My husband bought me an external hard drive last year to back up my pictures and music with. It's been well worth the investment!
May 8th, 2011
@michelleyoung Hehe, thanks. It's not a case of not having the hardware, it's just the software part to automate the process, that I haven't sorted yet.

Plus I've got about 250GB of stuff, in total, so that's not being emailed anywhere :p
May 8th, 2011
Thank you, I will run one right now! Have been thinking about doing it for weeks now but didn't get around to it yet.
May 8th, 2011
@eyebrows I think thats a rather lot of data lol Good luck with it :o)
May 8th, 2011
@eyebrows Yes, they do incremental. Only "new" files are copied. SyncToy is simpler to configure, very GUI, point and click. SyncBack offers additional options for saving to offsite servers via FTP and, in my opinion, the interface isn't quite as clean as SyncToy but it's certainly not "bad."

Thanks, Michelle. Good reminder--seems we all know we should do this but get busy and procrastinate. . . .

Good reminder. I have lost work before because of not backing it up. So now since I have lost stuff about 4 times, I keep my photos on a backup hard drive, discs, and a usb drive. Eventually one of them will fail so I like to be covered.

Great reminder, I lost the entire month of March because my computer threw a fit. (Going to play around with some recovery software later today.) I ordered an external back up drive when I bought my new laptop, just waiting for everything to come in.
May 8th, 2011
backed mine up on CDs but now don't know where I put them! LOL!!
May 8th, 2011
I just did it. Thanks for the reminder. I'd be cursing if I lost it. ;-)

Timely Public Service Announcement, thanks Michelle! I've got mine on two separate external drives, after laptop died last year and I upload plenty to flickr too for added archiving (BTW - if you're in the UK with BT/Yahoo Broadband, you get a free PRO account on flickr)

Plus I use Dropbox to sync folders between the various macs I edit pics on - it's free, and if you fancy trying it out, use this referral link and we both get extra free space :) http://db.tt/5FxfvJa
Sorry if that's a bit spammy, but it really is a great little online 'cloud' storage/backup solution, with neat sharing features too ...
May 8th, 2011
Never hurts to remind people about that. My laptop hard drive died recently, and I Was lucky enough to be using an online backup service, so I didn't lose any pictures at all. It may have taken the better part of a day to get hem all back, but I managed.
May 8th, 2011
Thanks.. I lost ALL of last years photos when we got a new computer. I am not very computer savvy, & my husband told me he was burning them on disk, but my too many photos confused him, and burned the pervious years (that happened to also be on the external hard drive) so sad.
May 8th, 2011
Glad to see you are all paying attention ;o)
May 8th, 2011
Awful when you loose photo's :o( Especially very precious ones. An accident happened to our hard drive a few years ago, keys got dropped on it.. stupid, stupid! Ellie's baby photos were on there. I'm still heartbroken about it. Always will be. Not all of them were completely lost, because we did get some printed out. But not all of them :o(
