Lens suggestions for Canon 5D

May 11th, 2011
Hello fellow 365ers. I'm going to be buying a used 5D this weekend and I'm having a bit of a hard time deciding what lens to buy. I currently have a Canon 50mm 1.4 (love it!) and a Sigma 60mm 2.8 macro (not loving that lens too much). I like shooting indoors and at night but I don't particularly like to use my flash so I need a fast lens. I do use off-camera flash when I have to though. I'm looking to add a zoom/telephoto and a wide angle lens. I can't decide if I want to stick to prime lenses or get one that can do both. I had the 17-55mm f2.8 and love the convenience but I really love prime lenses. I really need a telephoto lens right now and the wide angle can wait. I have a $1000 budget but if I can save some $$$...better! Suggestions please!!! Thanks!

@eileenmabalot You might be able to get your hands on an 85mm 1.8L or maybe a 135 F2.0L USM for that price...

Though you could squeeze for a better deal and get a cheaper zoom lens to compliment them ones...

Not sure if your 17-55 f2.8 is for Full Frame like 5D. You may be able to get a good used 24-70 f2.8 tho. If you want to go wide, both 24 f/1.4 and 35 f/1.4 new are more expensive, but you may be able to get good third party lenses or used Canon L for less...

I agree with Adam. However, and I may be mistaken, I don't think the 85mm 1.8 is an L series. There's a 85mm 1.2L, but that's over $2K new. Don't understand why the huge price difference $400 vs $2000. My guess is Canon is fleecing the corporate pro studios.

One thing to keep in mind is that you're going to lose your crop factoring with the 5D and that does take some getting used to. Your 50mm on the 5D will feel wider, like a 28mm on 50D crop sensor camera. So if you really love the feel of your 50mm, you should consider getting the 85mm 1.8 for the 5D. If you really want more telephoto, maybe the 200 2.8L would be what you want.

One thing I've read, and personally experienced with our 5D, is that you can get a strong vignetting issue with some lenses. It happens when we put a Sigma lens on the camera, but none of our Canon lenses have this issue.
