i really want a macro lens but no way does my budget allow for one at the moment so i had a browse and found a macro adaptor which should fit in to the lens i have so i can get practising until i can afford the real thing, i have also bought a tripod and a remote for my camera so i can start trying to get some long exposure shots and decent self portraits, i am slowly building up my kit, i will also at some point get my canon a1 into a shop for a check over and batteries so i can start using that aswell

Get yourself some extension tubes, they only cost a fraction of the price and do a great job.
If you are using a tripod too then it is no problem to use the tubes that don't have AF. Check out Amazon you'll get a set for about €15. With AF about €70.
This shot was taken with tubes from a tripod.. http://365project.org/jdonnelly/365/2011-05-14
Hope this helps.
Have fun.

Macro tubes are fun. They do a fine job and many people never have another macro lens. I actually use tubes with a macro lense as well at times which gives another world of access. Before I had a macro lens they were good for me.

There is no real need to spend money on lots of bits and pieces. A lot of really cool equipment can be made to match your need. A site I use a lot is: http://www.diyphotography.net/
...lots of good advice on how to make equipment cheaply that does the same job as the pro stuff. Then you can save your money to get a decent tripod.

If you are going to spend money make sure you get as good a tripod as you can afford. Tripods are often things people skimp on and they don't realise how important they are. I have a number of tripods now and frankly most of them are rubbish and my shots showed that. A great tripod is worth every penny (as long as you use it of course).

By the way, use the internet to find out things like reviews on equipment. There is a mine of information out there about specific items and it will help you make up your mind.

Have fun with your camera...
