Portfolios

May 20th, 2011
I need to put together a portfolio of my work and I have no idea where to start!! GAh!!! Please help me, pretty please.

Basically to start with it's for a toddler group but also a school with the intention of showing people my portrait photos. Most of my photos are of my two boys but I did do some photos last year for some other people and they have given me permission to use the photos. I have a couple weeks to sort this out so hoping that is enough time

What sort of media do I use to put the photos in, what size is best and how many photos should I have are just a few questions I have.

Thank you for any advice help in advance.

I would suggest printing off 8x10's and finding a very nice looking binder (not the cheap $1 ones, but something maybe leather or a leather-look-a-like) to present them in.

You're in a creative field, so a creative portfolio is perfectly fine. I knew a girl in college who found an old film box and put her prints in there. Find a fun way to showcase them. If you don't want to do something like that, just get a scrapbook, print out 8x10s and put a single picture per page...possibly a title to the pictures if you'd like. Good luck!

show your diversity as an artist too. Use 8x10s and get some of the different places, angles, colors, faces etc that you photograph your subjects. Good luck!

I would get a small size portfolio that can hold 8x10's I have one from Michael's craft stores---it zips close and has binder rings inside along with some pages that are for sliding the photo into to keep them nice.
Here's one example, not the one I have: http://www.michaels.com/ITOYA-Original-Art-Profolio%C2%AE-Storage-and-Presentation-Book/fa1207,default,pd.html?cgid=products-artsupplies-portfolios%26presentationcases-artportfolios&start=1

You'll want to look professional, and an artist portfolio style book will help you look the part.

or why not just a new invention idea, rather than printing your photos, just add them to one of the digital photo books, which u can do online then pick up, that way your photos don't get marked, and I think it looks just as good as them being printed.

An iPad would be a great way to share pictures with a small group if you don' t have to leave it with them...... Otherwise, I have never done a photography portfolio, but I have done several of my architecture work. I prefer a simple black 8x10 book. Your pictures tell such beautiful stories. That is what I love about our work. I think they speak for themselves and however you display them, people will love them! You are unique and eye catching! I look forward to seeing your pictures each day.

Thank you everyone for you replies. Yesterday I went and bought a black leather A4 display book which has fixed clear plastic sleeves inside. I think what I'll do is put some nice card inside the sleeves and attach the photos to those. I also have two digital photo frames which I've used before but obviously I can't/don't want to leave that with some people.

And @cohare Thank you so much for those lovely kind words, that put a lovely big smile on my face this Sunday morning.
