Minimum gear list when traveling - P&S or DSLR

May 24th, 2011
I'm trying to decide what gear to bring on my upcoming Hawaii vacation. I'm aiming to pack light. I imagine I'll mostly be taking family photos and maybe some coastal landscapes. Wondering what you guys would pack. I thought about just bringing my Panasonic GF1 with 20mm lens and my lightweight tripod, but I'm now thinking I should also bring my dslr and maybe 2 lenses (24-70 f/2.8 and 11-16 f/2.8), a strobe for fill, and a few filters. On the one hand it would be so liberating to not have all the gear, but on the other I love having options. What do you guys do? Pack your P&S/iPhone or the big guns? Thanks in advance.

How funny - I was just thinking about you! I'm the wrong one to ask about this, but based on what I know about you....I think the big guns. (especially the strobe for fill for those sunset pics!) Have a great trip!! :)

Nod
At the end of last year I went to Hawaii with both 5Dmk2 and 3 lenses, and rangefinder system with about 3 lenses. Use a lot of both. I bet you will get frustrated without DSLR cos GF1 wih one 20mm lens will not be enough!! If you only want to take just one, I would recommend DSLR and 24-70 f/2.8.

I would take both. The DSLR for the heavy duty sightseeing stuff, and the point and shoot for if you don't want to be lugging the DSLR around - for example if you go out for the evening. The best camera is always the one you have with you, so if you are leaving your DSLR behind in the evening because it is too big, then you should take your point and shoot to compensate! Well, that's what I do anyway!

I carry all my gear. Even when trekking mountains and streams in PNG, I carried the lot. The day you don't is the day you kick yourself. But on one trip where I was only allowed 10kg cargo and 5kg on board, I carried DSLR body, 14-42mm, 70-300mm and 35mm macro. I think I also had my 8mm fisheye... I also carried an underwater point and shoot in my pocket. All in a waterproof pack. I was spending time on canoes. The waterproof pack contained most of my clothing too. It was a rugged jungle trip and well worth the effort and sacrifice.

dslr > yep its bulky, but can do all the job .

Definitely the dslr :)

I only have a point and shoot, but I think that it being Hawaii, you need to take the dslr if you have the room to pack it. enjoy!

My philosophy is better safe than sorry so I would definitely take it all, just to cover all my bases....sure as you leave the DSLR at home you'll regret it! Hawaii would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for me so I wouldn't want to miss a single shot!

enjoy your hols - perhaps less is more? If you only end up leaving the DSLR in the hotel, or not take it out of its bag because it's impractical, then the GF1 will do the job surely... besides, your title is misleading because the GF1 sure isn't a P&S!

@ellen @viranod @cally @bobfoto @gavincci @indiannie_jones @weshook @bluemoon @vikdaddy - Failed to thank everyone for the feedback to my question. I ended up bringing both, but so wanted to leave my dslr behind and almost did after some feedback from Vikdaddy. Anyways, I thought of this today after posting up this photo - http://365project.org/lintbrush/test/2011-06-14. Thanks again guys!
